00:00The opening ceremony of the 2024 Paralympic Games will take place on Wednesday, August 28,
00:06and preparations are well underway. The Paralympic Committee had a recent press conference
00:10noting that this year's Games will break records on participation.
00:14We have 167 national Paralympic committees here ready to compete.
00:19That is a record for us. The previous record was 164 that was set at the London 2012 Games
00:27and equaled also in Tokyo. The committee also touted another accomplishment regarding the
00:32gender of athletes competing. We have 1,983 female athletes which is a record for us.
00:41Ensures we're at 45% for the Games. I think that's a tremendous achievement bearing in mind
00:47our first Games were in 1960. So to almost achieve gender parity in such a short time
00:53is really encouraging. Reuters notes there will also be an eight strong refugee squad.
