As ASF or African Swine Fever continues to rise in the country,
00:03
various departments of the government continue to restrict access to livestock or meat.
00:10
They are also making frequent checkpoints to inspect the meat being transported.
00:14
Some of them have a positive knowledge of African Swine Fever,
00:18
which is why some of the pigs and even the chickens are affected.
00:22
ASF is also causing concern and fear among some voters.
00:28
And to help us find out if the meat we buy is affected by ASF,
00:34
we are joined by Veterinarian 5 of the Quezon City Veterinary Department, Dr. Henry Barbero.
00:40
Good evening to all of you and welcome to Dapat Alam Mo.
00:43
First of all, Dr. Henry, before anything else,
00:47
what is ASF or African Swine Fever and is it contagious to humans?
00:54
African Swine Fever is a specific viral infection that is only contagious to pigs.
01:00
It is not contagious to humans.
01:03
If it is only contagious to pigs, why are we keeping an eye on the chickens?
01:07
Chickens also have what we call avian influenza,
01:11
which is contagious to humans.
01:15
So we are keeping an eye on different things.
01:17
Dr. Henry, how can we know if the meat is contaminated by ASF?
01:22
What are the signs that we should look at?
01:24
Let's show it to the meat, sir.
01:27
This is specific, like this pork belly.
01:30
All of these pork bellies, before it is separated from cold storages,
01:34
we have to stamp it.
01:36
It is inspected and passed.
01:37
It goes through NMIS and is inspected by meat inspectors.
01:40
And of course, the most important thing is,
01:42
before we touch or buy the meat,
01:45
we check the meat inspection certificate
01:47
that proves that it went through a proper inspection.
01:51
If it is frozen, we have what we call a Certificate of Meat Inspection, or COMI.
01:56
There is a certificate for that, doc.
01:58
How can a small piece of meat like this be inspected?
02:01
Yes, and also in the markets.
02:02
In the markets.
02:03
What are you looking at?
02:04
Yes.
02:05
For everything that goes out of cold storages and slaughterhouses,
02:08
it is all stamped.
02:09
And they cannot go out.
02:11
Each piece is stamped?
02:14
Yes, it is just a number of the stamp that we put.
02:17
Yes, the stamp is clear.
02:18
Here, how do we know?
02:19
The color, for example.
02:20
Yes.
02:21
What does it look like?
02:22
The color, the hardness, or the softness.
02:24
Do you know that?
02:25
Another process, we cannot know that from the texture.
02:27
Aside from the spots that can be seen.
02:30
The spots are like the bite marks,
02:32
the look that we are talking about,
02:34
that we can only see on the skin.
02:36
So there is like a bite mark?
02:37
Yes.
02:38
That is what we call a differential diagnosis.
02:41
If it is still suspected, we will cut it right away.
02:44
Because some of them we think are like swine pox,
02:48
but some of them really manifest that there is a wetness.
02:51
What is the color of the meat when it is sick?
02:53
If it is sick, it is not pink.
02:56
The normal color of our meat is pinkish.
02:59
If it is sick, it is pale?
03:01
It is pale, or if not, it is black because the blood is accumulated inside the meat.
03:06
Black?
03:07
Yes.
03:08
Does it smell?
03:09
Yes.
03:10
If it is considered, we will avoid it.
03:12
So that we will not buy or acquire any bacterial or viral infection in our meat.
03:19
Alright.
03:20
Doc, if ever, for example, we buy meat that is infected with ASF,
03:24
is there anything we can do to eat it?
03:28
Can we cook it thoroughly and the virus will be gone?
03:32
Or should we just throw it away?
03:34
As much as possible, if we can acquire this and it is suspected,
03:38
it is better to report it to the city.
03:41
We can give it even if we say that it is not contagious to humans.
03:46
But you can't eat it?
03:48
As much as possible, no.
03:50
Even if you cook it thoroughly?
03:51
Yes.
03:52
If we eat it, what will happen?
03:53
It will not have any effect on us.
03:55
But if the ASF pig is dead and it has a bacterial infection,
03:59
we might have the disease that it has a tail.
04:03
From the time it died, it was killed again.
04:06
So it is already dead?
04:07
Double dead.
04:08
Double dead.
04:09
But for us, will we get food poisoning?
04:11
Will we get sick?
04:12
Yes, that can happen.
04:13
If we can see meat that has ASF, where can we report it?
04:17
Directly here in Quezon City.
04:19
We have a veterinary department in Quezon City.
04:22
We can immediately report it to the Bayi Bureau of Animal Industry
04:26
and National Meat Inspection Services.
04:28
Those are the agencies we can call.
04:30
Do you have any additional reminders for our viewers?
04:34
For all consumers in the Philippines,
04:37
we know that pork-eating is really common.
04:40
So let's avoid it.
04:42
And let's be careful with what we buy.
04:45
Because we don't want to get infected with ASF.
04:50
We still have time.
04:51
Let's go back to the chicken.
04:54
What should we check if it has avian flu?
04:57
The avian flu is specific.
05:00
We can see it in the belly.
05:02
In the belly?
05:03
Yes.
05:04
And the most specific thing we can see in the chicken is the air sac.
05:10
If it's still alive?
05:11
Yes.
05:12
But what is the manifestation of this in the chicken?
05:14
It's the same.
05:15
It has pus.
05:16
It has pus.
05:17
You can also see it in the feet.
05:19
You can see it in the farthest extremities or the farthest part of the body.
05:24
That's where you can see the pus.
05:25
Is it thin?
05:26
It's not thin, but it's swollen.
05:28
It's black.
05:29
It's black.
05:30
It's also smelly.
05:31
The swine flu has no effect on humans.
05:34
This avian flu, is it zoonotic?
05:37
Is it contagious?
05:38
Yes, it's contagious.
05:39
It's contagious.
05:40
And it has types.
05:42
Highly pathogenic and low pathogenic.
05:45
Is it contagious or not?
05:46
Yes, it's contagious.
05:47
What will happen if we get infected with it?
05:49
We can get infected.
05:51
We'll get infected.
05:52
And of course, if you have pneumonia, if it's highly pathogenic, you can die.
05:56
You can die?
05:57
Yes.
05:58
Avian flu is very scary.
06:00
Let's just wait for the vaccines, especially for the ASF.
06:04
Thank you very much, Dr. Henry Barbero of the Quezon City Veterinary Department
06:08
for giving us information about the African swine flu and avian flu.
