Is The Future of Sustainable Farming Indoors?

This vertical farm is showing what we can do when farmers and engineers put their heads together.

00:00As the world gets warmer and more inhospitable for many of our planet's plants, farmers

00:08and engineers will have to work together to come up with new technologies for producing

00:12food.

00:13And vertical farming is one of the ways we're already seeing as a solution to that problem.

00:17This is Ayyad Abu Ramadan, and this is his 1076 square foot greenhouse that he says is

00:22an example of what urban farming might look like in the future.

00:25He says that this little indoor farm located in the Gaza Strip is capable of producing

00:29the same amount of fruit as an outdoor one 10 times its size.

00:32And vertical indoor farmers don't have to worry about things like bad weather or plant

00:36eating pests, and plants can be grown year round rather than seasonally.

00:40With Ramadan adding, greenhouses like this one have the great benefit of increasing productivity

00:44and increasing quality, with the importance of controlling all the inputs that enter into

00:48the production process.

00:50And Gaza is a great place to test the implementation of indoor farms like this one, as it's one

00:54of the most densely populated areas in the world.

00:57But it's not just saving on land usage.

00:59It's also producing better quality food.
