A Queen-maker could be needed with incoming Northern Territory elections

Six days out from the Northern Territory election and major parties are campaigning hard on the home stretch. But so too are independents and minor party candidates fielding questions today on what could happen come Saturday.

00:04That's what you get with a lawful Labor government.

00:07You get a clear plan, a clear resource plan.

00:10Eight years under Labor where our economy has gone backwards, crime is out of control

00:15and our lifestyle has been eroded.

00:19As one leader joins the 50,000 Territorians to cast their ballot early, it's not just

00:24major parties making a final pitch.

00:27The mood in the community is very positive towards independence.

00:30They're sick of Labor, haven't supported the people and they're really a bit suspicious

00:34about CLP.

00:35There's a big field of independence in the running.

00:39Some consider it a serious chance and strong motivation amongst the Greens.

00:43It all puts talk of minority government in the mix and questions about what that would

00:48look like.

00:49While many independents have not firmly committed to supporting one party or another, there

00:55are some emerging hypothetical non-negotiables, such as lowering the age of criminal responsibility.

01:02What we need is smarter justice here.

01:03We need to be doing things that are going to work and make our community safer.

01:08I can see no evidence that that will do anything to make anyone safer.

01:12The ridiculous situation around our intent to waste $1.2 billion at Middle Arm on gas

01:20is crazy.

01:21It's far from a sure thing yet, and one of the surest bets among the independents thinks

01:26the chances of a hung parliament are low.

01:28It's slight, slim, next to nil and I'd be very, very surprised if that's the outcome

01:35on Saturday night.

01:36Both Labor and the CLP would prefer to govern in their own right.

01:40They need to reach the magic number of 13 seats to do so.

01:44However, if Labor loses two seats from its tally and there's not a big enough swing to

01:48the CLP, it could mean a crossbencher is able to play queenmaker to Eva Lawler or Lea

01:54Finocchiaro.
