Keir Mather MP wants to reopen well-loved pubs in Leeds towns and villages

Labour MP Keir Mather spoke to the YEP after his constituency was expanded to include parts of Leeds such as Kippax and Methley.  He said that the cost-of-living crisis remains a priority, as well as work to reopen old pubs and improve amenities in rural areas.

00:06taken in towns and villages in Leeds like Kippax and Methley. What are the issues facing

00:11those places and what are your priorities in the constituency?

00:14Sure, so providing cost of living support for local people is still one of my top priorities

00:19and it's something that I was really proud to do in my time as the MP for the former

00:23constituency of Selby and it's something that I'm really going to be hitting the ground

00:26running with here in Kippax and Methley. There's also the point as well that local communities

00:30here are extremely vibrant but don't necessarily have the amenities that they deserve. That

00:35relates to pubs so I've been doing a lot of work on reopening closed pubs but also making

00:39sure that places like Micklefield have a community shop as well. There are challenges to transport

00:44that I'm going to be working really hard with the Mayor of West Yorkshire to fix around

00:47making sure we have frequent and reliable public transport and I'll also be working

00:51with the local police to make sure that we tackle crime and especially deal with anti-social

00:55behaviour which I know has been an issue on Kippax's High Street.
