00:00Researchers at the Julius Maximilians University in Germany have designed a new process for
00:08light harvesting.
00:09Their prototype system, named URPB, converts sunlight into electricity or other forms of
00:15energy more efficiently.
00:17The system converted 38% of incident light into fluorescence, a significant leap compared
00:22to other systems today.
00:25The researchers said they were inspired by naturally occurring systems like plants, which
00:29use a combination of organic dyes to absorb a broad-spectrum light for photosynthesis.
00:35The university attempted to replicate the arrangement of those dyes, hence the name
00:40URPB, ultraviolet, red, purple, and blue, the four light wavelengths that can now be
00:46effectively absorbed by the system.
