Transcript
00:30Hello everybody, this is Carlos Montero from Paris.
00:52This is for people half an hour where I want to talk about so many things about this Olympics.
00:59One of the mega stars of those games, Simone Biles, left today.
01:04She was planning to leave making a world record five gold medals.
01:09But one of ours, a Brazilian gymnast, Rebeca Andrade, got in her way.
01:14We are going to tell you later what happened.
01:18In that also Colombia made history today with the first time somebody won a medal in gymnastics.
01:27No female, no male have done that before.
01:29But let's go to talk to our people who are going to be with us during this half an hour.
01:35First let's go with Eduardo Regonesi.
01:37He's been, I mean at this time of the day, it's almost late afternoon here in Paris.
01:42He's been to so many sports, so many disciplines that I don't know exactly where to start.
01:47Eduardo, where do you want to start?
01:51Hello Carlos, how are you?
01:53Indeed, we were following our people, our athletes from Latin America, early this morning
01:58as you well mentioned in gymnastics with the main star of gymnastics, Simone Biles, but
02:03also a rising star, Rebeca Andrade from Brazil, eclipsing a little bit the North American
02:09athlete.
02:10We were there watching those matches, watching those games, and it was very, very exciting.
02:15A lot of crowd cheering for both of these athletes, and we have all the details.
02:20And also, after that we moved for wrestling, wrestling with another shining star, Mijain
02:25Lopez from Cuba, looking for his fifth gold medal.
02:29We were there at his match.
02:31We will tell you how he did in just a couple of minutes, Carlos.
02:37I'm really jealous because Eduardo and Charlie has the chance to go to all the events and
02:44I have to be here at the studio.
02:47Thank you Eduardo.
02:48We'll be back with you in a few seconds.
02:51Charlie, he was this afternoon watching the Leonas, the Lions, the famous hockey team,
02:58female hockey team.
03:00It was a fantastic match.
03:01They tied, then they went to penalty kick, but let Charlie go ahead with a preview.
03:08Hi Carlos, how are you?
03:12Tonight we'll find out the four teams of the semifinals of women's hockey.
03:16Behind me, Argentina just beat Germany in penalties after tying one to one.
03:20We got some interviews with some players and with some fans as well, but wait until later
03:24on so I can show you guys some more.
03:29Thank you, Charlie.
03:30I know Charlie has the chance to interview the Argentine goalkeeper who was a hero because
03:36like I said, they went to penalty kicks and she saved two goals.
03:40And now Argentina, las Leonas, they are in the semifinals.
03:45Let's talk about this Rebeca Andrade, the more condecorated athletics in Brazil, maybe
03:52more than Pelé, the president Lula da Silva.
03:56In Twitter, he said, you made us all proud.
03:59Congratulations, you are a superstar.
04:02What did she do?
04:03Let's go back with Eduardo.
04:05Eduardo was there, he was watching that historic event of gymnastics.
04:10Eduardo, tell us, she's the new superstar of Brazil, isn't she?
04:17The new superstar of Brazil and in Paris too.
04:20Let me tell you, we were at the match, at the games earlier today at gymnastics.
04:24When the announcer said Simone Biles' name, the crowd went crazy, as expected.
04:29She's one of the biggest athletes here in Paris 2024.
04:32But then the announcer mentioned Rebeca Andrade and the crowd, the cheering was almost as loud
04:39as it was for Simone Biles.
04:41So I would say she's a superstar in Brazil.
04:44And after the game, she's going to be a superstar all over the world as well.
04:49It all started early this morning with the men's Paralympics, where China got the gold
04:53medal, Ukraine got silver and Japan took the bronze medal.
04:56Then it came time for the women's balance beam.
04:59This is where Rebeca Andrade and Simone Biles were going to compete, were going to face
05:03each other.
05:04But surprisingly, it was a very, very tough competition for most of the athletes.
05:08A lot of them fell off the platform, fell off the bar.
05:12In fact, the only three that didn't fall are the ones that got the medals.
05:16First place was for Alicia De Amato, 21 years old, from Italy.
05:20She got gold medal with a surprising 14.366 scoreboard.
05:25China got second and Italy also got the bronze medal.
05:29So very, very good day for the Italian gymnastics.
05:33After that, it was time for the women's floor final, where Simone Biles and Rebeca Andrade
05:40were going to get a revenge of what happened earlier.
05:43Just Biles finished fifth on the previous competition, Andrade finished fourth out of
05:48the podium.
05:49But on the women's floor final, they were competing head to head.
05:52There's a lot of expectations of this match, this rivalry.
05:55But just so you know, they're very good friends.
05:57They became friends in Rio 2016.
06:00They got to share a lot.
06:01And they're really, really good friends.
06:02And we saw that at the end of the ceremony, where Rebeca Andrade got the gold over the
06:08two Americans, over Simone Biles.
06:11And both of the Americans kind of did a bow, kind of congratulating Rebeca Andrade.
06:16So this shows you that there's a good sportsmanship, there's a good friendship between those two
06:21very, very elite athletes.
06:24Then later on, on the men's horizontal bar, Japan got the gold medal.
06:27And the surprise, Colombia, Angel Barajas, as you were saying, first medal for Colombia
06:32in this discipline.
06:33He got the silver medal, followed by China.
06:37After gymnastics was over, we ran across Paris to the Champs-Elysees, where wrestling was
06:44starting, a wrestling event with the main star.
06:47The main star of this event is Mijain Lopez from Cuba.
06:50He's a four-time gold medal winner, looking for his fifth medal on his sixth appearance
06:56on an Olympic Games.
07:00Very impressive.
07:01He's going to be 42 in just a couple of weeks, and he started his route today for another
07:08gold medal.
07:09Before he took the floor, we were following Raiver Rodriguez from Venezuela on the 60-kilogram
07:15discipline.
07:16Raiver from Venezuela won his first match, but sadly lost against China on the quarterfinals,
07:22so he does not make it through.
07:24Also, Kevin Adams from Cuba lost on first round against Japan, so he doesn't make it
07:28through.
07:29Raiver Rodriguez still has a chance.
07:31It depends on if the Chinese athlete who beat him makes it through the final or not.
07:37But Mijain Lopez, as we were saying, he has his first match today on the 130 kilograms.
07:44He defeated, with no problem, South Korea, and then defeated Iran to get to the semifinals,
07:51where he will face one of his disciples, if you can say.
07:56Cuban-born, Chilean-nationalized Yasmany Acosta won his two matches, and now he's going
08:06to battle on the semifinals.
08:07They're not going on the same side of the tournament.
08:15Yasmany Acosta is going to play a player from China, and Mijain Lopez is going to play from
08:22Azerbaijan, Zabab Sharati.
08:25In best-case scenario, they will both meet on the final.
08:28Worst-case scenario, they will both get the bronze medal.
08:31This is all happening tonight at 9.
08:33Of course, we're going to leave here in just a few minutes, go back there and see what
08:38the results of the semifinals are on the men's 130-kilogram wrestling match.
08:45Busy day behind you, and more busy in front of you.
08:53So right now they're playing in football.
08:57Morocco is beating Spain.
08:59Let's see how's the score.
09:00I'm going to find out, because before we start on Morocco, I mean, who's doing great in football.
09:05But Eduardo, you were talking about the good relationship that had Simone Biles and Rebeca
09:12Andrade.
09:13The funny thing, Simone doesn't speak Portuguese, Rebeca doesn't speak English.
09:18So that means they have to communicate each other with hands or making jokes, because
09:22you see them all together, but they don't speak the same language.
09:25But what I wanted to ask you, that was very symbolic, because gymnastics is a sport that
09:30mostly are for white girls, at least in the USA.
09:35My daughter used to practice gymnastics.
09:37But here in the floor routine, we saw three girls of colors celebrating gold, silver and
09:46bronze.
09:47And silver and bronze, they were two Americans.
09:49The goalie was a Brazilian.
09:51And the two American girls bowed, like saying she's the number one, she's the superstar.
09:58How do people react to that scene that is viral on the social media?
10:04Yeah, it's funny that you mentioned that, Carlos.
10:09Even us watching it from the outside, not being Brazilian, not being from United States,
10:15you get goosebumps.
10:16You get very emotional when you see these kind of performances.
10:22When you see athletes crying, when you see athletes giving it all.
10:24It happened with Carlos Alcázar yesterday or with Djokovic.
10:28When after winning so much, they still cry, they still get emotional.
10:31It's very tough for the crowd, for us, even if we're working, not to feel it, not to get
10:37goosebumps on our arms and get emotional inside.
10:40A lot of people got teary-eyed.
10:43It's so much of the emotion that these athletes transmit, that they communicate to the crowd,
10:47that the crowd gets involved and gets, in a little way, participate with them, get to
10:52feel a little bit of what they're feeling, I think.
10:57That's amazing.
10:58That's really amazing.
10:59Thank you, Eduardo.
11:00See you later.
11:01We have a show in Spanish, in Telesur Español, at five o'clock, Caracas time, from here,
11:08with Eduardo and Javier Soto, a major legend in athleticism.
11:15We are talking about, precisely, thank you, Eduardo, we are going to talk about athleticism.
11:18Yesterday, we knew it was a very close 100 meters.
11:23It was the highest, the closest in any race.
11:28USA won that race, but it was so close, followed for Jamaica.
11:33But now, let's see people who did, you know, we have a segment about history.
11:38People who are legends now, after competing in the Olympics.
11:42Let's talk now about Sian Miller.
11:45She competed 400 meters, she's from Bahamas, and she won gold in Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020.
11:55Let's go to see her story.
12:04The gold was already very close, and it was difficult to predict who would be the winner.
12:10In the Bahamas runner's final spirit, Sian Miller surprised everyone with an unorthodox
12:15close by slimming over the finish line, and take the advantage of the melismas to the
12:20American world champion, Alexon Felix.
12:23Miller, in 49.44 seconds, the best record of her life, thus won the 400 meter women's
12:31run to Rio de Janeiro 2016.
12:34Felix to Zulbert in 49.51 seconds, and Jamaican Cherica Jackson came third.
12:41All I could think about was the gold medal and the next thing I remembered, I was on
12:46the ground, said Miller, after suffering the cuts and burns from the shooting.
12:51Questions to the validity of their actions were appeased with own regulations of the
12:56International Federation of Athletics Association that does not question the way a runner crosses
13:01the finish line.
13:03The body, in Article 164 of its Rule of Procedure, points out, athletes will be run in order
13:10in which any part of their bodies, i.e. trunk but not head, knee, arms, legs, hands or feet,
13:17reach the vertical plane of the edge closest to the finish line.
13:21Sian Miller, the Bahamian flag bearer, did not lost one of the five races she made that
13:272016, so she came in a strike and with a good pace.
13:40Can you imagine competing in five Olympics and in each one win a medal?
13:46That's what Mijaín López is trying to do.
13:49We were talking to Eduardo, he won today, he's going to the semifinal and he's going
13:54to make history.
13:55He's a legend in the Cuban sport.
13:58I'm sure you heard about him, but just in case you don't know much about his brilliant
14:02career, let's go with the story.
14:10Our Cuban wrestler, Mijaín López, won the gold medal in Tokyo 2020 and became the sixth
14:15athlete in history to win four Olympic golds during the four games in a row.
14:20Behind Paul Estrella Corolla, we see Corey Issue, Michael Phelps and Al Ulthorn.
14:30In Paris 2024, at the age of 41, he could win a first medal and equal the record of
14:37five consecutive golds held by British rower Steve Reinhardt, a ship between Los Angeles
14:4384th and Sydney 2000.
14:46This is yet another feat of our people.
14:50Let's see how far he can go.
14:59We were trying to talk to him, but his coach, who did talk to us, he said that they are
15:05not going to let him talk to the press until the end of the Olympics game.
15:10I hope we can talk to him about him winning a gold medal that would be getting a medal
15:16for five consecutive Olympics, something really, really amazing.
15:21Let's talk about hockey.
15:23Argentina so far has a gold medal in BMX freestyle.
15:29Precisely Maligno Torres, the guy who won the gold medal today, he was in Buenos Aires.
15:37He went to what we call the pink house, where the president, Javier Mele, has his office
15:42and he said hello from the balcony, symbolic balcony, where the president talked to the
15:47people in that balcony and he showed the gold medal to the people next to the president,
15:53Javier Mele.
15:55But we are talking about Argentina.
15:58Let's talk about another team that has a big chance to go back to Buenos Aires with a medal.
16:03Hopefully it's going to be a gold medal.
16:05Today, they have a really tough match.
16:08I'm talking about Las Leonas, female hockey.
16:12They were playing against Germany.
16:14They were losing.
16:16It was almost the end of the match.
16:19They tied.
16:20They go to penalty kicks and they make it to the semifinal.
16:26And now they are going to play against Netherlands.
16:30Let's see what's happened.
16:31That's going to be a fantastic match.
16:33But Charlie was at the stadium today.
16:35He has a chance to interview the goalkeeper who became a hero of the Argentine team.
16:41Let's see his story.
16:45Hey Carlos, how are you?
16:47What a wild game we just saw.
16:49Argentina beat Germany in penalties.
16:51But first they had to suffer because Germany scored first.
16:57Then at the very end of the game, Argentina tied it up.
17:07Before they eventually had to go to penalties and win.
17:10This is what the goalkeeper said.
17:12How does it feel to be a semi-finalist?
17:15It's crazy.
17:16I think that we dream it in a lot of times, but to be here and to be now in the semi-finals,
17:26it's very emotional and very happy.
17:28Are you the Dibu Martinez of hockey?
17:30No, no, no.
17:33I think that I'm me and Dibu is Dibu, so he's more crazy than me.
17:39But I'm very happy to help the team in that.
17:41What do you think about all the fans that come to support you?
17:43They're really crazy.
17:44Yes, yes.
17:45I think every Argentine supporter is crazy.
17:48They go wherever you are and they make you feel their support, always there, and it's
17:54very happy for us.
17:55Argentine fans are used to suffering in games.
17:58This is what they had to say about it.
18:00How does it feel to be a semi-finalist?
18:01Well, the passion itself speaks to everything.
18:04Argentinians are very passionate about sports, also hockey, and in this case, we are in the
18:10semi-finals.
18:11Let's go for the medal.
18:12It's great.
18:13It was a great play, a great match, and we are very, very happy to see the Leonas in
18:20the semi-final, and we are going straight to the gold medal.
18:24We are so happy right now.
18:26I think we were suffering almost until the end.
18:30We scored in the last minute, so I think that happens all the time with us, and we enjoy
18:34it a lot.
18:35It's more important for us to score at the end, and I don't know.
18:38We have something different, and right now it's time to celebrate.
18:43We can celebrate double right now, triple, and just keep going until the end.
18:47Let's go for the semi-finals.
18:48Let's see if it's Netherlands or, I don't know, wherever.
18:52I'm so happy and ready for the semi-finals.
18:54Do you think you'll get gold this year?
18:56Of course!
18:57It's ours!
18:58I prefer to be a little bit more careful about it, but yeah, we are supporting the
19:05ladies since the beginning, so I'm so happy.
19:08Fingers crossed.
19:09Touching wood.
19:10Everything.
19:11Let's go, Argentina.
19:12Until then.
19:13Well, there you have it, Carlos.
19:14The only South American team that has made it to the semi-finals, whether they play against
19:16Great Britain or the Netherlands.
19:18Remember, Argentina hasn't won a gold medal yet, but they have a lot of faith this year.
19:23Back to you, Carlos.
19:27Thank you, Charlie.
19:28And they're going to play the Netherlands.
19:29They just won their match, so they're going to the semi-finals and they're going to face
19:34Argentina.
19:35Why do Argentine people, when they speak English, they have such a strong accent?
19:40I don't.
19:41I'm kidding.
19:42You know I do, but I hope you understand me.
19:44And Charlie, he's so stable.
19:45He speaks English perfectly.
19:48Let's go to see the medals.
19:50Who is in first place in the medal table?
19:53Argentina is having a great Olympics, still in first place, has 52 all together, 21 gold.
20:02United States is coming second strong, 19, 75 all together.
20:07Australia is having a great Olympics too, 13 gold, and 32.
20:12And France, the home team, 12 gold, 45 all together, Korea, 11 and 26.
20:22UK, Britain, 10, the same as Japan, and then Italy, 8th place.
20:28Let's go a little bit, if we can go a little bit more, so we can see if we can get one
20:31of the Latin America number one, still Brazil.
20:35Now it's in 16th place.
20:37That's what I wanted to see, 2 gold, 5 bronze, 11 all together.
20:43Good for Brazil, still in first place.
20:46Tomorrow could change.
20:48Tomorrow is going to be a new day.
20:50Tomorrow we are going to have another show from here, from Paris.
20:54I hope you stay with us.
20:56Have a wonderful evening.
20:58Bye-bye amigos.
20:59See you tomorrow.
21:20Bye-bye.
