Tasmanian artist, Zoe Grey, wins Hadley’s art prize

A painting of a rugged part of Tasmania's north-west coast has claimed the 100-thousand dollar Hadley's art prize. Tasmanian Zoe Grey's work was the first ever to win with both the judges and the packers.

00:00Zoe Gray's painting, The Shape of Rock, took home this year's Hadley's Art Prize.

00:06The Tasmanian artist was inspired by the rugged landscape of Marawar on the state's northwest,

00:12where she grew up.

00:13I hope the work can evoke perhaps a reflection on place and how we connect to places of significance

00:21to us.

00:23The judges whittled 35 finalists from over 600 entries.

00:27It's a pleasure, but it's a very difficult thing to do as well, because there is so much

00:31good work here that is equally deserving of a prize, but at the end of the day, we had

00:39to make a decision.

00:40Miss Gray's painting stood out to the judges.

00:42The story behind the work certainly was one of the deciding elements for myself, looking

00:47at that notion of memory and connections to country.

00:52And to the people who unpacked and hung the artworks.

00:55And this is actually the first time that we've had the Packing Room Prize winner also

00:58be the major winner.

00:59So Zoe won that earlier this week, which I think just goes to show how broadly her art

01:03has really connected with people.

01:05You can view the finalists' artworks for free at Hadley's Orient Hotel until August 25th.

01:10And while the piece that won the major prize will be joining the hotel's permanent collection,

01:15the remaining artworks will be available for sale.
