00:00How are actors able to cry on command? Is it onions? Staring without blinking?
00:05Well, in this week's Ask Us, we went to acting coach and author of Fine on Acting,
00:10A Vision of the Craft, Howard Fine, to get our answers.
00:14Howard has taught the likes of Austin Butler, Dwayne Johnson, and Emma Roberts,
00:18so he knows what's up when talent sheds a tear on cue.
00:21The coach frowns on external manipulation, such as eyedrops or menthol sticks.
00:27Instead, he tells us that he has his actors work with emotional recall,
00:32where they summon up a memory. He explains,
00:35I have my students work with emotionally charged personal objects, a ring, a letter, a photo.
00:41His actors also try the what-if method,
00:44where they put themselves in a position similar to the characters.
00:47Well, if you ever need to cry on command, now you know the way to do it.
