00:00Welcome back everyone it is Amelia I hope you are fine.
00:09The Boys Season 4 introduces Billy Butcher's old friend, Joe Kessler.
00:13But it features a massive twist concerning Jeffrey Dean Morgan's character.
00:17Kessler makes his first appearance in The Boys Season 4's premiere, catching up with
00:21Butcher while Emin gets chastised by the CIA.
00:25Their initial conversation reveals that Kessler and Butcher know each other from their time
00:29in the military and Butcher even saved the other veterans' life while at war.
00:34However, The Boys Season 4 Episode 6 reveals their backstory doesn't unfold exactly as
00:40the premiere suggests.
00:41Kessler crops up throughout The Boys Season 4, encouraging Butcher to continue his quest
00:46for revenge against Homelander, even if it means sacrificing his humanity.
00:51During their first meeting, Kessler tells Butcher that the world needs someone like
00:55him as he's willing to do what's necessary.
00:57Kessler pushes Butcher to neutralize Ryan, even if it means betraying him.
01:02He also suggests The Boys team is a joke in The Boys Season 4 Episode 5 and he cheers
01:07Butcher's gruesome treatment of Sameer.
01:10Kessler appeals to Butcher's crueler tendencies but he isn't quite what he seems.
01:14The Boys Season 4 Episode 6 delivers a brilliant twist when it comes to Joe Kessler.
01:20As it turns out, Butcher has been imagining his old friend for the entire fourth season.
01:24Kessler doesn't actually show up to push Butcher back into the game nor is he the one
01:29behind Butcher's schemes.
01:31He's a creation of Butcher's mind and a representation of his inner conflict.
01:35The Joe Kessler Butcher sees and speaks to throughout The Boys Season 4 isn't really
01:40there.
01:41But he is an existing person in The Boys universe.
01:43The real Kessler was Butcher's friend during the war.
01:46But Butcher never actually saved him.
01:48The story Kessler recounts in The Boys Season 4 Episode 1 is a lie, something Butcher wishes
01:54had happened.
01:55The ending of Episode 6 reveals that Kessler never made it out of the Panjshir Valley.
02:00You never dragged me out, Kessler tells Butcher during the big reveal.
02:04You left me to die.
02:05Of course, Butcher doesn't remember leaving Kessler in the Panjshir Valley because his
02:09tumour is messing with his mind.
02:11It's causing him to forget things and see people who aren't there.
02:15These people are two incredibly influential figures in his life, both of whom represent
02:20vastly different parts of his personality.
02:23It's obvious why Becca is the angel on Butcher's shoulder as she serves as his motivation and
02:28conscience throughout The Boys.
02:30However, viewers may question why Butcher's devil looks like Joe Kessler.
02:34There are two possible reasons this is the person he conjures up.
02:38First, Kessler clearly hates sups just as much as Butcher.
02:41Although viewers never meet the real Kessler, the one in Butcher's mind alludes to conversations
02:47between the two of them and these discussions centre on getting rid of sups.
02:51They likely brought out the worst in each other, which explains why he represents Butcher's
02:56worst impulses.
