What is elder abuse?

One in six Australians over the age of 65 have experienced some form of elder abuse.

00:01And I made their life miserable.

00:03If I don't change my will, I can't see the grandkids again.

00:08Elder abuse takes many forms, including financial abuse, neglect, physical and sexual abuse.

00:16One in six Australians over the age of 65 have experienced some form of elder abuse.

00:24The most common is psychological abuse.

00:27The perpetrator is often a family member or a trusted person in their life.

00:33He's always asking me to do things.

00:36Drive him to the shop, take him to the doctor.

00:39But I'm busy with my own life and I don't have time for all his stuff too.

00:43He's my primary carer and I don't ask for a lot.

00:47But I do need help with my groceries and my medical care.

00:51I don't know what would happen if I miss my medication again.

00:56Elder abuse can include denying a person the right to make their own decisions,

01:01physically restraining a person, threatening,

01:05humiliating or name-calling, or withholding health care and medications.
