01:09:54presence in the box scored some huge goals for the under 18s

01:09:59last season Ethan Wheatley the under 18s premier league cup final

01:10:09to secure the league and cup double I'm not quite sure what

01:10:14I'm not quite sure that Thomas Partey realised that Christian Eriksen was up behind him

01:10:23edge of the penalty area referee hasn't given it Scott McTominay

01:10:26claiming for it and he he's got every right to be claiming for it too Ben

01:10:34caught as he was about to strike that ball

01:10:38the officials have been poor I have to say for both teams I think the officials

01:10:41have been poor should preface this with the fact that

01:11:49of that one it was one where Gabriel for me hands

01:11:53down giving away a penalty and it wasn't given and all of a

01:11:57sudden he was a little concerned by the pace and

01:12:01power of Manchester United number nine he's Nelson dispossessed then pulls

01:12:06Anthony down gives the foul on yeah he's lively isn't he Rhys Nelson

01:12:10he's from where he was he's not on the pitch anymore but

01:12:14he's lively Rhys Nelson

01:12:20to argue that it's not really it's a good tackle from

01:12:24Tony Evans and then Anthony making the most of the contact to win the free kick

01:12:31pull somebody back by the shoulder

01:12:41Sam Murray mentioned him before Sam Murray but

01:12:46it's one of those that Manchester United picked up

01:12:49after Huddersfield had closed their academy and

01:12:58loves to get forward loves to try and affect the game any way that he can

01:13:05out on that left hand side and he's been he's been so much fun to watch for the

01:13:0918s and the 21s yeah really comfortable on the ball as well

01:13:18that's well done too to find Scanlon, Scanlon tries to feed it through comes

01:13:21out to Ericsson, Ericsson's effort is smashed into the forehead of

01:13:26Gabriel and it goes behind for another Manchester United corner yeah clever

01:13:29ball from Anthony flicking it with the outside of his left

01:13:32foot and Scanlon was unlucky to find the run of Scott McTominay and

01:13:37Ericsson tried to whip it into that near post area

01:13:41it's a brave header isn't it from Gabriel from that range from Christian

01:13:43Ericsson another three changes coming first of

01:13:47those will be Eddie Nketiah Gabriel Jesus that makes way

01:13:52Kai Havertz onto the field for Arsenal Martin Odegaard making way

01:13:58for him and that third change will be Gabriel Martinelli

01:14:03Rhys Nelson leaving the field of play there's a

01:14:07little bit of pace coming on there isn't that

01:14:10just a smidge

01:14:19well you're looking at me sideways there but Martinelli beats

01:14:23Kai Havertz in the footwork, I'm not disputing that

01:14:27I don't think Kai Havertz is any slouch but Martinelli is quick

01:14:30So is Nketiah yes you just need to be alive and aware to that situation make

01:14:35the most out of this set piece Ericsson delivers oh it's gone all the

01:14:38way across the face and Ethan Wheatley's got his head in his

01:14:41hands I don't think he was a million miles away from making contact with that

01:14:45Jadon Sancho looking to attack from the left-hand side is dispossessed by

01:14:51Fabio Vieira what a ball from Christian Ericsson running control by Sancho as

01:14:55well on the edge of the box and he's keep he's going to keep going but

01:14:58eventually dispossessed when Adele tries to put the challenge in Arsenal

01:15:08and there's a good challenge by Kivio as he was

01:15:11at one stage he looked favourite to be wiggling his way through there

01:16:06SoFi Stadium is an artificial pitch but we've had some intel that in fact it's a

01:16:11grass pitch that's been freshly laid for this which

01:16:14surprised me considering they went to great lengths in 2020 when the stadium

01:16:18opens to show everybody how high tech and

01:16:20fancy their artificial surface was so there you go I got it wrong in the

01:16:25first 45 minutes down the outside goes Gabriel Martinelli

01:16:30absolutely rapid gets the cross into diving header but

01:16:33brilliant interception from Christian Ericsson a

01:16:36toe tip to it to turn it away from Kai Havertz yeah

01:16:40good break from Martinelli that's what he gives you especially when you're in

01:16:43the dying embers of games last 15-20 minutes his pace is the last

01:16:47thing you're going to want to face and he pulls it back into a brilliant

01:16:50area but Christian Ericsson was there to get enough on it to divert it away

01:16:55from Kai Havertz's head it's been brilliant by Christian Ericsson there

01:17:01he was the absolute tip of his toe as well to keep it away

01:17:06from the onrushing Arsenal player

01:17:11well we've got an interesting ending to this one

01:17:15one a piece Arsenal's equalizer very clearly offside on the replays

01:17:20but they have been on occasion a match for this Manchester United side

01:17:25they've played some good football last night

01:17:27yeah and they brought out the best save from Andre Onana as well from

01:17:31Cossard's shot that was looks like it was

01:17:35nestling right in the roof of the net with power it's a brilliant save

01:17:40bent into the penalty area headed back across by Havertz punched away by

01:17:47deflection finds Ericsson Ericsson going to try an early one towards Jadon

01:17:54the Arsenal defenders looks to take the touch and just as it falls out of the

01:18:01it's the Josh Nicholls wasn't it that come across from his right back berth

01:18:05on the cover showed decent pace as well didn't it

01:18:09it was a good bit of covering defending wasn't it

01:18:13both sides academies having a big part in this one

01:18:27Fish wrestling with Nketiah too much so says the referee

01:18:34a little bit of confusion from Manchester United 10 to half

01:18:39maybe because he's got you can get away sometimes with one arm but when you

01:18:44when you're grappling with both arms around the front of an opponent then

01:18:51it's kind of times out of 10 referees are going to give it yeah it's clever

01:18:53from Nketiah too who's definitely got a fistful of

01:18:56most probably of Will Fish's shirt behind his back

01:18:59Martinelli is offside just a little bit of conversation

01:19:05between Johnny Evans and Will Fish just maybe a bit of confusion that needed

01:19:08clearing up there yeah and I'm not convinced that he was

01:19:13offside when that ball was played it's his speed Martinelli more than

01:19:17anything and I said that these officials have not officiated this game well at

01:19:21all and I think if you were to see

01:19:25that in VAR he was a good two yards onside he's just very quick Martinelli

01:19:34there have been a few offside decisions that have been

01:19:38not even close debatable I was going to go with

01:19:42that wasn't even close for me

01:19:46but like I said I think he's been the same for both teams

01:19:49but they all have just totally indecisive and

01:19:54just putting the flag up because they're not sure

01:20:00pulls all the way back with Carl Hine now out to the right hand side of Josh

01:20:11Johnny Evans high up the field here trying to make a challenge oh dearie me

01:20:29Thomas Partey can stick the boot in where it hurts as well and I think he

01:20:33was just beginning to lose control of that wasn't it

01:20:40they are painful it's not a great challenge is it no not at all

01:20:49when you're coming over the top like that and yet that's how

01:20:53we've seen so many occasions meta tarsals going

01:20:58because these boots as fancy as they may be and as good as they look that

01:21:02they don't offer as much protection as they once did

01:21:08lightweight speed yeah agility all of that that's the downside hugely

01:21:14but there has to be a payoff somewhere yeah

01:21:17I did hear that um some players players like Lionel Messi actually have

01:21:21extra padding put on on top of their boots to try and prevent stuff like that

01:21:25from happening and you can sort of see why can't you

01:21:27yeah I think it was necessary because we went through a spate didn't we when we

01:21:30were getting meta tarsal injuries for fun in the premier league

01:21:35technology changes and styles and fashions and function of

01:21:41football boots has all changed there are always trade-offs Anthony to

01:21:47Wheatley has a little bit of a stab at it's got

01:21:51to be a Manchester United no it's gone the other way

01:21:56Ethan Wheatley a little disappointed

01:22:05a penalty shootout regardless of the score we might need a penalty shootout

01:22:23there might be a sniff of an opportunity it's a

01:22:27little bit uh nudged by Kai Havertz as he comes

01:22:43he's got the dominators occupying a very high position at the minute almost up

01:22:46alongside Ethan Wheatley

01:22:55trying to make life a little bit more tricky for Arsenal and as I've been

01:22:58saying that was a real feature of the under

01:23:0018s for Manchester United last season was the fact that they didn't give

01:23:04anything away to anyone for free everything you had to work for and that

01:23:08was why they were so successful over the course

01:23:10of that the whole of last season best team in that division by a long

01:23:14long stretch Arsenal though trying to make some

01:23:18damage here Anthony steps in and makes the challenge

01:23:22comes out to Martinelli Martinelli with a lovely touch and he's

01:23:26gonna have a go it's a really good finish as well

01:23:28from Gabriel Martinelli just manages to wriggle his way free

01:23:32and the right-footed effort beats Andre Inanna Arsenal lead 2-1

01:23:37yeah that's what pace can give you um change of direction low center of

01:23:43gravity obviously James Scanlon is going to be

01:23:45disappointed that he's not shown him towards the touchline

01:23:48he he's allowed Martinelli a little bit too easily like I said I know

01:23:53it's difficult when when you you are as quick as as Gabriel

01:23:57Martinelli and you can change direction and he just pushes the ball and he

01:24:00goes and there's not a lot you can do about that

01:24:02but you can get your body in a position where you're actually forcing him

01:24:06to go towards the touchline and then the angle for the shot is

01:24:09it's way too acute and he's got to cross it but take nothing away from Martinelli

01:24:14he's uh that little move there and then that burst of acceleration

01:24:18and maybe Will Fish will probably be disappointed that he didn't make a

01:24:21better effort of the challenge when he was confronted by him

01:24:24and Andre Inanna was unsighted at his near post

01:24:28it's a shame but you know pace I said especially when you you know

01:24:34you're getting a little bit tired towards the end of games

01:24:38he's difficult to mark at the best of times yeah

01:24:41I agree and that little trick as well and it's the stock go isn't it the

01:24:45rapid acceleration from Martinelli leaves Scanlon in a

01:24:48in a little bit of a position I think it's also important to point out that

01:24:51if you ask James Scanlon where his preferred position was

01:24:54he's not going to say right back of course not of course he's he's slotted

01:24:58in there to do a job for the team he would much rather be playing

01:25:01higher up the pitch in fact some of his better performances for Manchester

01:25:03United have been in sort of a free ranging 10 roll or an

01:25:07inside right really but he is playing right back because

01:25:10Manchester United need somebody to slot in in that position yeah and maybe

01:25:14Will Fish could have got himself over a little bit sooner knowing that

01:25:17you know as any wide player these days wants to cut in and wants to shoot

01:25:22because they're you know inverted aren't they and he is right footed Martinelli

01:25:27playing on the left hand side so he wants to step inside onto his more

01:25:30favoured foot and maybe Will Fish could have got

01:25:32himself across that little bit quicker but it was still a decent piece of

01:25:37wing play.

01:25:40Christian Ericsson is going to try and get this into the penalty area but he's

01:25:43got to deal with a bit of pushing and shoving it's a great ball into the box

01:25:45too and headed away well what a beautifully floated delivery

01:25:49it was absolutely begging for somebody to run on to the end of

01:25:52it eventually it's good defending from Arsenal to get it away yeah his

01:25:54deliveries have been really good and we're going to see another one now

01:25:57because both his corners from this right hand side the out swinging corners have

01:26:00been excellent we still haven't had a look at the

01:26:04chance for Ethan Wheatley from his last corner

01:26:07they've been right on the money

01:26:12short option with Anthony doesn't take that though floats it towards the back

01:35:20it's Gabriel Martinelli the difference a little stop go in the penalty area

01:35:24rapid acceleration and a neat finish into the bottom corner which means it's

01:35:32lost to Arsenal by two goals to one now though Ben

01:35:37we've got some penalties

01:35:40well it's really good practice we saw it last year United converted

01:35:45all five penalties now they're going to be disappointed

01:35:49they've not won the game the way they started it

01:35:53they look much the better team but you know changes happen and they didn't

01:35:57really get going in that second half once the the changes have been made but

01:36:01this is real good experience this you never know

01:36:05at what point in your career you may have to

01:36:08be in a position where you've got to take penalties in front of thousands and

01:36:11thousands of people you know the manager is going to be

01:36:15looking out for the nerve of some of these players and

01:36:19first and foremost who wants to actually put their hand up and say

01:36:21yes i'll take one have you been in a situation where you're asked to take a

01:36:24penalty Ben um no i've been in a position where you

01:36:30had to put your hand up i mean i have taken penalties

01:36:33but i think there are probably people that are a little bit more confident than

01:36:37me stepping up from 12 yards but i have taken penalties before what's it

01:36:41like stepping up there the pressure on

01:36:45spotlight on you well again i don't think i could come

01:36:49again you know you have penalty takers and you have people there that are like

01:36:53yeah i'll take one and they're like you just

01:36:57don't think they're ever going to miss i was never like that i always felt it

01:37:00was a good chance i probably would i uh i've never tested myself from 12

01:37:06yards i'm far better talking about football than i am playing football

01:37:09i know i'd make a fool of myself i'm sure you wouldn't oh i promise you

01:37:14um let's not even be being self-deprecating

01:37:20arsenal have won the toss and they will take the first penalty

01:37:27some of the uh replays from that game that goal from gabriel jesus is offside

01:37:32twice by the way and uh any other day of the week that

01:37:36gets ruled out

01:37:39that's a good finish it's difficult and especially when he

01:37:44he reverses it goes back through willfish his legs which

01:37:48inevitably when that happened goalkeepers stand

01:37:51very very little chance of being able to pull off save

01:37:55especially when i said he's reversed it into into the near post when he

01:37:59probably thinks he's going to go far post but

01:38:03he's made a couple of wonderful saves andrea nana in this game

01:39:40i'm gonna try and get inside fabio viera said he's pointing the direction that

01:39:44he wants him to go he's leaving the side of the goal open

01:40:18so you do what you can to put them off and to unnerve them

01:40:23and we've seen all sorts haven't we from goalkeepers over the years from

01:40:28banging the crossbar to

01:40:31bruce grovelar's wobbly legs here comes scott mctominay

01:40:34and finishes brilliantly into the bottom right hand corner

01:40:38can't tuck it away any better than that ben no that is a terrific penalty

01:40:43i always think it's really difficult when you go across like that with your

01:40:47right foot

01:40:50that was pure accuracy and the power to go with it great

01:41:53from the northern irishman as well hit the side netting before it hit the back

01:41:57of the net and that makes it two on manchester united yeah another great

01:42:11rare that goalkeepers will save them even if they get close

01:42:50completely miss the target from 12 yards and and don't give yourself a chance to

01:42:57the youngster steps up starts his run-up smashes it go

01:43:00words and wide it goes and ethan wheatley can't convert from the penalty

01:43:06for united and that was exactly what i was saying about

01:43:09going doing that with your right foot and going across scott mctominay

01:43:13executed it perfectly but that is what you always run the risk of

01:43:16when you're opening your body out like that for me

01:44:39to carry it past the keeper before he could get close yeah just

01:44:44when you come under a little bit of pressure

01:44:46i need somebody to relieve it and more experienced players who over the

01:44:52years knows exactly where the goal is from

01:44:54pretty much any distance up to about 30 yards

01:44:59and this is a pressure penalty now for gabriel score it

01:45:03and they're in it still miss it and they're out

01:45:08andrea nana trying the same tricks again gabriel starts his runner gets it

01:45:15goalwards and rifles it home now manchester united

01:45:18with an opportunity to win the shootout the last penalty if it scored

01:45:25will mean manchester united go through 4-3

01:45:30andrea nana he's trying every trick in the book

01:45:35and he decides to go the wrong way in the end and it's rifled home

01:45:38yeah it's another good penalty though isn't it a little bit similar to johnny

01:45:41evans in the opposite corner decent power always rising pretty much

01:45:46where the back netting meets the side netting jayden sancho could

01:45:50win the shootout at least for us here comes sancho

01:45:54and scores brilliantly low and to the right hand side and manchester united

01:45:57might have lost over 90 minutes but they have managed to win the

01:46:01penalty shootout at the end of the game successful penalties from scott

01:46:04mctominay johnny evans christian erickson

01:46:07and jayden sancho means united win the shootout by four goals to three and not a

01:46:11bad set of penalties all in all ben no they were they were really good

01:46:14obviously ethan weekly will be disappointed opportunity to get himself

01:46:18on the score sheet but that's the risk you take sometimes when

01:46:21you open your body out brilliant stuff from manchester united

01:46:25unfortunately couldn't get the job done in 90 minutes against an arsenal side

01:46:28that caused them a real test but they have won the penalty shootout
