UN Secretary General calls for action following extreme heat

The Secretary-General of the United Nations called for international cooperation to meet climate targets and to better protect billions exposed to the effects of extreme heat.

00:00The United Nations Secretary General António Guterres issued an urgent call to action after

00:08the world experienced its hottest day on record on Monday.

00:14He states that extreme heat events are increasing in scale, intensity, frequency and duration

00:20and warns that Earth is becoming hotter and more dangerous for everyone and everywhere.

00:27Extreme temperatures are no longer a one-day, one-week or one-month phenomenon.

00:33If there is one thing that unites our divided world, it is that we are all increasingly

00:40feeling the heat.

00:42The UN chief asks for a joint international effort to address the extreme heat and urges

00:48countries to work towards the global goals agreed at COP28.

00:53He calls out the world's wealthiest countries and urges that their leadership is essential

00:57to the phasing out of fossil fuels.

01:00The G20 must shift fossil fuel subsidies to renewables and to the support of vulnerable

01:06countries and communities.

01:09And national climate action plans must show how each country will contribute to the global

01:14goals agreed at COP28.

01:17Guterres attributes extreme heat to the widening of inequalities.

01:21He stresses that the implementation of measures to protect exposed workers and those vulnerable

01:27to climate change must be in place to reflect the reality of the rising heat today.
