World leaders pledge billions to sports and sustainability at pre-Olympics summit

Around 500 participants attended Thursday's summit near the Louvre Museum in Paris championed by French President Emmanuel Macron and International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach.

00:00World and business leaders have pledged billions of dollars to finance sporting initiatives

00:06aimed at accelerating sustainable development a day before the Olympic Games opens.

00:12Five hundred participants, including 50 heads of state and government, attended the Sport

00:17for Sustainable Development Summit in Paris.

00:20The event was championed by French President Emmanuel Macron.

00:25The synergy of our key actions and everything we can do with the sporting movement in this

00:30sense is absolutely fundamental.

00:32I wanted to thank you for your mobilization.

00:35The Games are a time to highlight what is being done, to launch new initiatives that

00:39we are doing.

00:41And thank you for all the funding that is being mobilized for the African continent,

00:46the Latin American and Pacific continent in this sense.

00:49And I thank you for the commitment of each day in this direction.

00:54A coalition of public development banks pledged to invest 9.2 billion euros across the world

01:00for community-based, inclusive and sustainable sports infrastructure by 2030.

01:05And the French development agency said it would release 500 million euros for sustainable

01:10development in sports.

01:18Olympic ideal is today challenged by the tragedy of war.

01:24The 2024 Paris Olympics opens on July 26th and runs until August 11th.
