00:00There you go.
00:11This is Forrest and he's our biggest giraffe.
00:14He's a big boy.
00:15And isn't he just amazing?
00:18He's actually the father of all of our little babies.
00:21I think he's eyeing off those pellets.
00:22Shall we grab some?
00:23Ready, mate?
00:24Oh, he loves his pellets.
00:28In the wild, when baby giraffes are born, they disperse and find their own families
00:32and keep the genetics really pure.
00:35So zoos want to work together in providing that same, similar effect to make sure that
00:41populations stay healthy.
00:50Right now, we're relocating one of our young giraffe to Monado Zoo, where they'll be able
00:56to be part of their breeding program.
01:00It's especially nice because Scarlett's mother came from Monado Zoo, so Scarlett's going
01:06to be back with her grandparents.
01:08It'll be fun to see if they recognize each other.
01:11I am in the support vehicle, so I'll be following behind Scarlett.
01:18We're going to be traveling all the way from Sunshine Coast all the way down to South Australia.
01:21It's going to take us roughly 26 hours.
01:26We'll be making sure she's comfortable on her journey, so if anything does go wrong,
01:30we're right there to look out for her.
01:36Giraffes can be a little bit shy.
01:38So sometimes when they're out on the savanna, they'll feel a little exposed and they'll
01:42move into treed areas because they can look out over all of the trees, but they know they're
01:47secure because the trees are around them.
01:50So in the special transport box, we're giving her the same effect.
01:54She has a window to look out, so she feels comfortable that she can see her surroundings,
01:59but the walls make sure she feels secure.
02:06This is a really big adventure for a little giraffe that's never left Australia Zoo before.
02:11It's a little bit sad because it will be time to say goodbye to Scarlett.
02:16I've been working with her since she was born.
02:18She's almost a year and a half old now, but we're also really excited that she will get
02:23to meet her new giraffe friends very soon.
02:37I think we're here.
02:401,200 miles down, I have never been more happy to see a Monato Zoo in front of me.
02:47I knew that it was big, but this is really impressive.
02:54Oh wow, look, there's a giraffe.
02:57That's crazy.
03:03Everyone made it. Scarlett had a smooth trip.
03:06Everything went perfectly, which is incredibly exciting.
03:11Good girl, Scarlett.
03:13She's in good health. She's not stressed out.
03:17Oh, so brave. Good girl.
03:20Now, of course, even though it was a move within Australia, there's still a quarantine process.
03:26So she'll go into quarantine for 30 days.
03:29We'll make sure she's healthy and happy, and then she'll be able to meet the rest of the giraffe.
03:37It'll be interesting to see if she bolts straight out or if she's going to be a little bit hesitant.
03:41Yeah, some come out, straight away some don't.
03:43Just give it a go? Yep.
03:46Come on, Scarlett. Good girl.
03:56I'll just try and come in and just try and call her from this angle.
03:59Yeah, sure.
04:00Good girl. Hey, Scarlett.
04:04Good girl.
04:06Good girl.
04:11Good girl.
04:12I'm just going to stand here.
04:16Good girl.
04:20She's in.
04:23I think she just will settle down as she's in there a little bit longer.
04:27It's obviously a new environment for her.
04:32We've made sure there's plenty of bedding on the ground so she can lie down if she wants to,
04:35and she's got heaps of room that she can move around.
04:39It feels fantastic that all the work that we've put in for the last few months has finally got to this point,
04:45so I'm just so excited to see what happens down the line.
04:56We're at Minato Zoo in South Australia near Adelaide so that we can commence a very special event.
05:04So this is the largest open plain zoo in the world.
05:08In the world?
05:091,500 hectares.
05:11Wow, that's amazing.
05:13Little Scarlett came here to live and be part of the breeding program.
05:17It's out of her 30-day quarantine, and so today's the big day that she gets to meet the herd.
05:23It's so exciting.
05:24I really, really love it. It's so cool. It's the perfect spot for African animals.
05:29They just feel so at home.
05:32If Africa's freezing cold.
05:34Yes, it is. It is quite chilly.
05:38Guys, we made it!
05:40Good to see you.
05:42Great to see you. Thank you.
05:44Good to see you here. Hello.
05:46Very good. Good trip down. So excited.
05:50So, how's Scarlett doing?
05:52She's doing really, really well.
05:54She's gotten all the keepers enamored with her.
05:58I'm so excited.
05:59It's the big moment. That's going to be really cool, isn't it?
06:01Saddle up. We'll title off, shall we?
06:03Great. Thank you.
06:11Our beautiful little Scarlett's mother came from here, and her parents are here.
06:16So, for the family tree aspect, Scarlett's going to be back with her grandparents.
06:24So, we have three or four main giraffe yards here.
06:26We have three or four younger males here as well.
06:28And, of course, young boys being like, you know, young teenagers.
06:31Robert.
06:32They can be pretty cheeky.
06:34So, there might be some bustling today between those head members.
06:37But, of course, nothing too savage.
06:39I think she might walk out today, and they won't even blink.
06:42Oh, I love her.
06:44Slow motion panic.
06:46She's so funny.
06:47So, we'll jump out of the car here, guys.
06:49Hi, little girl.
06:52I think she's in for a run.
06:54So, she's pretty frisky, I reckon, after one month of being cooped up in there.
07:00Okay, Robert, time to let her go, I think.
07:02Okay, big moment.
07:03So, let's open this gate here for her to walk out through.
07:05All right, here we go. Gate's opening.
07:07You ready, Scarlett?
07:08Here's your new home.
07:10Woo-hoo.
07:12We'll just get back in the car here now, guys.
07:14Give her some space.
07:15Okay.
07:16And let her take her time to walk out.
07:17Good girl, Scarlett.
07:18It's all right, Scarlett. Good job.
07:20It's just a matter of backing off and letting her find her own time
07:24to check everything out first and then come on out.
07:30Hey, beautiful girl.
07:34I like how she walked right up to the gate and then went,
07:37it's a trap.
07:38Yeah.
07:40Oh, good job.
07:42Oh, nice.
07:44She's smelling everything like you said she would.
07:54Very brave girl.
07:59Watching her come up to the gate.
08:01Good girl.
08:02Smell each side of the gate and kind of tentatively
08:05Good girl.
08:06step through.
08:08Kind of like a kid on the edge of the diving board.
08:10I'm going to jump.
08:11I'm going to, maybe I'm not.
08:13Yes, I am.
08:14Maybe.
08:15Nope.
08:19Doing good, Scarlett.
08:21Melt on.
08:22Good job.
08:23Wow.
08:24Oh, perfect.
08:25Oh, here we go.
08:31Straight through that one.
08:32Yeah.
08:33Awesome.
08:34She's confident now.
08:35That's fantastic.
08:37Wow.
08:38She's like, wow.
08:40That's awesome.
08:41I'm free.
08:43With any big move like this, there's always a chance that
08:46the rest of the giraffes might not accept her.
08:49She's a new animal and she's a young animal as well,
08:52so you never quite know what's going to happen.
08:55Oh, look, there they are, there they are.
08:58Did you want Sia to get on the board?
09:01So you can see she went straight out of that gate
09:04and already she's joined up with the herd.
09:08She was checking her surrounds.
09:10She had her head down a lot.
09:12She was kind of smelling the ground
09:14and she didn't feel the least bit intimidated
09:17and it was just fantastic to watch.
09:20So that's her grandmother there, Maisha.
09:22I love that her grandmother's here.
09:25Watching her walk out with such confidence
09:28to immediately join the herd
09:30and for them to be so accepting
09:32was nothing short of spectacular.
09:35Giraffes are now classed as vulnerable
09:38and we were doing our part to ensure
09:41that we have healthy giraffe populations in captivity.
09:45I think Scarlet's going to live a very wonderful,
09:48well-loved life.
09:50She's going to have a great life.
09:52I think Scarlet's going to live a very wonderful,
09:55well-loved life
09:57and I think she's going to be so happy in her new home.
