00:00Just like the Philippines, Japan also faces its own territorial dispute with China
00:04over the Senkaku Islands in the East China Sea.
00:07What are some of the measures Japan has taken which probably can be applied to the Philippines?
00:13Firstly, there is no doubt that the Senkaku Islands in the East China Sea are clearly
00:20an inherent part of the territory of Japan in light of historical facts and based on
00:28international law. Indeed, the Senkaku Islands are under the valid control of Japan since 1895.
00:38Therefore, there exists no issue of territorial sovereignty to be resolved concerning the Senkaku
00:44Islands. But at the same time, as you know, Chinese coast guard vessels have been around
00:51that region and has intruded into our territorial water around those islands.
00:59Against those incidents, Japan has and will continue to act firmly and calmly to maintain
01:08its territorial integrity. Japan continues to strive for peace and stability in the region,
01:15which is to be established through the observance of international law.
01:21From this point of view, Japan highly appreciates the government of the Philippines
01:26for having consistently complied with the arbitral abort in 2016.
01:34I'd like to know, Mr. Ambassador, what can the Philippines learn from Japan as far as
01:39dealing with the situation is concerned?
01:41I think we are facing various similar challenges in the maritime sphere, East China Sea, South
01:51China Sea. But at the same time, the situation in Japan and in the Philippines are not exactly
02:02identical, of course. Japan and China have established some frameworks, including fishery
02:13treaties or the rescue agreements between the two countries. So that might be something that
02:22we can work together.
