French Prime Minister Gabriel Attal officially resigns from role following legislative elections

French President Emmanuel Macron has officially accepted the resignation of his Prime minister Gabriel Attal.

00:00French President Emmanuel Macron accepted the resignation of his Prime Minister Gabrielle Attal this Tuesday evening.

00:07However, Attal and his cabinet of ministers will remain in place during the next coming weeks,

00:13especially during the sensitive period of the upcoming Summer Olympics here in Paris.

00:19While the NFP, the left-wing coalition, the one that won the most seats during the French legislative elections,

00:26is still battling to come up with a name for the future Prime Minister.

00:31And France is really going into quite an unprecedented period, known as a resigning government,

00:37and that means that it cannot be toppled by a no-confidence vote from the rest of the MPs in the French National Assembly,

00:44that's the lower house of the Parliament.

00:47And so this transition government, headed by Gabrielle Attal and his cabinet,

00:51will only be able to take care of everyday matters.

00:55It will not be able to push any political or policy measures.

01:00And this could be okay for a couple of days or maybe a few weeks,

01:04but it could really pose a democratic issue if this takes longer than a couple of months,

01:10especially considering how complicated the negotiations have been to come up with a name for France's future Prime Minister.

01:17The NFP, the left-wing coalition, is composed of different parties,

01:22like, for example, the hard-left France Unbowed Party, the Socialists, the Communists and the Greens,

01:27and they really have been squabbling to nominate someone.

01:31On Monday evening, the Socialists, the Greens and the Communists came up with a name from the civil society.

01:37Her name is Laurence Tubiana, and she is an activist as well as a diplomat,

01:43and she was one of the key actors in coming up and signing the Paris 2015 climate agreement.

01:50However, the France Unbowed LFP party rejected this nomination,

01:55claiming that she is too close to current French President Emmanuel Macron.
