Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro called the man who was killed at a rally for former President Donald Trump a "hero."

Shapiro said on Sunday that Corey Comperatore was a former fire chief from the area who loved his family.

"Corey was a girl dad. Corey was a firefighter. Corey went to church every Sunday. Corey loved his community and most especially we loved his family. Corey was an avid supporter of the former president and was so excited to be there last night with him in the community.

Shapiro said his wife told him that Comperatore protected them when gunfire started at the rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.

00:00First and foremost the assassination attempt on the former president Donald
00:05Trump last night was absolutely unacceptable and tragic. Lori and I are
00:11grateful that the former president is safe and according to him and his team
00:17is fine. It's also important to note that last night three of our fellow
00:23Pennsylvanians were shot one fatally and two in critical condition. I've just
00:30spent time speaking to the families and I want to offer my prayers and the
00:37prayers of all 13 million Pennsylvanians for the two individuals
00:42who are being treated at this time. We lost a fellow Pennsylvanian last night
00:48Cory Comparator. I just spoke to Cory's wife and Cory's two daughters. Cory was
01:00a girl dad. Cory was a firefighter. Cory went to church every Sunday. Cory loved
01:08his community and most especially Cory loved his family. Cory was an avid
01:15supporter of the former president and was so excited to be there last night
01:22with him in the community. I asked Cory's wife if it would be okay for me to share
01:30that we spoke. She said yes. She also asked that I share with all of you that
01:36Cory died a hero. That Cory dove on his family to protect them last night at
01:46this rally. Cory was the very best of us. May his memory be a blessing. Last night
01:53was shocking for this community and for this Commonwealth and I know for this
01:59country. Political disagreements can never ever be addressed through
02:07violence. Disagreements are okay but we need to use a peaceful political process
02:14to settle those differences. This is a moment where all leaders have a
02:21responsibility to speak and act with moral clarity. Where all leaders need to
02:28take down the temperature and rise above the hateful rhetoric that exists and
02:34search for a better brighter future for this nation.
