Wombourne Leisure Centre has been helping out a West Mercia Policeman as he completes his mammoth swim challenge, raising money for a military charity.

00:00Wambourne Leisure Centre, but West Mersey Police car. Tom, what's going on? Go on, fill us in.

00:07Yeah, thank you. I'm currently doing a charity swim. It's a 29 mile swim at Wambourne, which kindly let me use their facilities free.

00:15It's in aid of Help the Heroes. The charity is a 29 mile swim, which will be the same distance as the Normandy Beach landings 80 years ago.

00:27That's a bit of an eye-opener, isn't it? For 29 miles of beach. You don't get that when you're watching Save It Private, do you?

00:34No, not at all. It is actually a lot further than that, but that's the actual beaches themselves where the soldiers landed on.

00:41And obviously trying to raise charity for Help the Heroes in relation to completing 29 miles over the next month.

00:47So you've got a month or two to do it, so you've been doing it in roughly a mile, two mile sessions?

00:53Yeah, that's correct. I'm 17 now.

00:55I mean, just to give it a bit of perspective, you say a mile, it's got the 1 in it, but to do a mile, it's 65 lengths in total to do the mile.

01:07That kind of raises the game, doesn't it? So are you a stranger to swimming? I presume not.

01:13I can swim, but I thought it was a good idea at the time. I am struggling now, but by hook or by crook I will make sure I finish it.

01:21And what have you found in terms of the body? Does it like swimming distances better in the morning or in the evening? Are you mixing it?

01:28It's definitely an afternoon person myself.

01:31So you're a local lad round this way, you're not a million miles from here, and you're a police officer based over in?

01:39Mallingsgate.

01:40So how come Wamburn then?

01:43Wamburn's local to me. My children use the swimming pool. It's a great facility. The staff here are really, really good.

01:49I thought it would be a nice time to do the challenge at this place.

01:53So do you want to be a pro swimmer now, or once this challenge is done are the trunks going down the window?

02:00The trunks will be definitely packed away until holiday. That will be the last time they come out after this.

02:04Have you noticed an improvement in your fitness then?

02:06Massively.

02:07Yeah, that's a good bonus then.

02:08I've lost a bit of weight as well.

02:10Well there you go, then I bet the missus is coming up with the next challenge as we speak.
