00:00Core UMNO voters in Sungai Bakar remain on the fence as they head to the polls tomorrow,
00:06despite having voted for Perikatan Nasional during the state election last year, says
00:10a think tank.
00:12It said its survey of the Sungai Bakar electorate revealed that the UMNO supporters who had
00:15cast their ballots for PASU's Norizami Latif last year were not as inclined to vote for
00:20PN again.
00:22While a group of them said they would still back the opposition coalition, others expressed
00:26uncertainty and were still mulling their options, it said.
00:29Ilham Center also said support for PN reached its peak during the six state elections last
00:33August and has since tapered off.
00:36It said the mood among young voters who turned out in large numbers to support PN last year
00:40has clearly changed, as their sentiments of support are not as strong this time around.
00:45Meanwhile, the think tank said Chinese voter turnout stands to have a significant impact
00:50on the by-election, with the community seemingly less excited about the unity government.
00:55It said the lack of enthusiasm for the PHPN alliance was due to the government's economic
00:59policies and the state government's performance so far, particularly when it came to water
01:04and infrastructure issues.
