00:00It's being described interchangeably as a landslide, a slaughter and a Tory wipeout.

00:07Prompting grins from ear to ear in the Labor camp as Keir Starmer claimed his seat and

00:12vowed to usher in a new era of change for the United Kingdom.

00:16Because tonight people here and around the country have spoken and they're ready for

00:22change to end the politics of performance and return to politics as public service.

00:30The change begins right here because this is your democracy, your community and your

00:37future.

00:38Exit polls expected Labor to win 410 seats with a clear majority in the House of 650.

00:44The Conservatives trailed well behind with an expected 131 votes in the party's biggest

00:49defeat in a century, delivering a crushing blow to outgoing PM Rishi Sunak.

00:56There were however some gains on the right side of the political pendulum with the far

01:00right anti-immigration party reform predicted to gain a surprising 13 seats.

01:05But on election night it was mostly glee for Labor fans, albeit with a touch of wariness.

01:14I'm cautiously optimistic that we're going to have some competent governance moving

01:20forward.

01:21That's all I hope for.

01:22I think it's time for a new future and that's going to be good for this country.

01:26When they come in we'll have to hold them to account on the things that they promised

01:34to do and probably get them to do more.

01:38In the early hours of Friday morning Rishi Sunak conceded defeat, saying he had called

01:43Keir Starmer to congratulate him and that there was much for his party to learn and

01:47reflect on.
