00:19Only two other African riders, both white, Robbie Hunter and Daryl Impey of South Africa,

00:25had previously won stages on the Tour.

00:28Girmay, who was already the first black African to win a Grand Tour stage at the 2022 Giro

00:33d'Italia, battled it out at the finish line to beat Colombian Fernando Gaviria and Belgian

00:39Arnaud Deleuze, second and third, respectively.

00:42Richard Carapaz took the overall lead, becoming the first rider from Ecuador to wear the yellow

00:47jersey, which he snatched from the shoulders of Slovenia's Tadej Pogacar on added places
