02:16Most people know Hedy Lamarr as a top actress during Hollywood's golden era.

02:22She is less well known as a brilliant inventor.

02:25One of her inventions with composer George Arndt Heil was a forerunner to today's Wi-Fi,

02:31Bluetooth and GPS technologies and has led many to dub Lamarr the mother of Wi-Fi.

02:38The National Women's History Museum describes their invention as an extraordinary new communication

02:44system used with the intention of guiding torpedoes to their targets in war.

02:50The system involved the use of frequency hopping amongst radio waves with both transmitter

02:56and receiver hopping to new frequencies together.

03:00Doing so prevented the interception of the radio waves thereby allowing the torpedo to

03:05find its intended target.

03:08Born in Austria in 1914, Hedy Lamarr displayed an innate curiosity and intelligence from

03:15a young age.

03:16Her passion for science and technology would eventually intertwine with her illustrious

03:21acting career leading to groundbreaking discoveries.

03:26Despite facing numerous obstacles as a woman in a male-dominated industry, Lamarr's innovative

03:32spirit prevailed leaving an indelible mark on the world of technology.

03:38Hedy Lamarr's inventions, one of Lamarr's most remarkable inventions was a communication

03:43system developed alongside composer George Arndt Heil.

03:48Their invention aimed to guide torpedoes during warfare by utilising frequency hopping between

03:54radio waves.

03:56This ingenious technique involved both the transmitter and receiver rapidly switching

04:01frequencies preventing the interception of signals and enabling the torpedo to reach

04:07its intended target undetected.

04:10Although the invention was initially deemed too advanced for implementation during World

04:15War II, its concepts laid the groundwork for modern wireless technologies.

04:21Lamarr's frequency hopping invention, patented in 1942, remained relatively unknown until

04:29the 1960s when it gained recognition for its significant contributions to the field

04:34of telecommunications.

04:36Fast forward to the present day and we can see the impact of Lamarr's work in the ubiquitous

04:41presence of Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and GPS technologies in our daily lives.

04:48Lamarr's inventive genius truly makes her the mother of Wi-Fi.

04:53Since Lamarr's invention, Wi-Fi technology has grown in leaps and bounds, there is now

04:58Wi-Fi mesh technology and Wi-Fi versions have kept evolving, like Wi-Fi 7, which has been

05:05recently.

05:06Meanwhile, Lamarr's patent expired before she ever saw a penny from it.

05:12While she continued to accumulate credits in films until 1958, her inventive genius

05:18was yet to be recognised by the public.

05:21It wasn't until Lamarr's later years that she received any awards for her invention.

05:27The Electronic Frontier Foundation jointly awarded Lamarr and Aunt Heil with their Pioneer

05:33Award in 1997.

05:36Lamarr also became the first woman to receive the Invention Convention's Bowlby Nass Spirit

05:42of Achievement Award.
