00:00A stray dog attacking an 8-year-old girl in the city of Necca in northern Iran.
00:21The little girl named Zoha died 18 days later of rabies.
00:26It is a case that has shocked Iran.
00:28Dog attacks have exploded there in recent years, and the number of rabies vaccines being
00:32used has tripled since 2002.
00:35Our observer Farhad, a wildlife expert in Tehran, says the underlying problem is a clash
00:40between a dog-friendly society and a dog-averse regime.
00:58Farhad says the dog-averse regime is based on a dog-friendly society and a dog-averse
01:05regime is based on a dog-averse regime.

03:11These are rare images three members of a so-called uncontacted tribe coming out of
03:17of the forest and meeting 21st century civilization,
03:21workers from a huge mine on the edge of their territory.
03:25They seem peaceful and curious.
03:29They hand over their machetes.
03:32The three forest dwellers are members
03:34of the Hongana-Manyawa tribe who live
03:36on the island of Halmahera in Indonesia.
03:39On the edge of their territory is Weda Bay Nickel,
03:42the world's biggest mine for nickel,
03:44a key component in making batteries for electric cars.
03:48It's a joint venture partly owned
03:50by a French company called Aramet.
03:53According to the NGO Survival International,
03:55most of the 3,000 or so Hongana-Manyawa
03:58have had contact with the modern world.
04:00A few hundred, like the three filmed last month, have not.
04:04This family, having seen their forest destroyed
04:08and along with the forest, obviously their food,
04:12they've been forced out
04:13and they have come out into this part of the mine
04:17because they're unable to get food for themselves
04:20because they get their food from their forest
04:22and their forest is being cut down.
04:24So it's extremely dangerous
04:26for these Hongana-Manyawa people.
04:28They have very little immunity to diseases
04:31which are very common for us and not at all lethal for us
04:35like the common cold or flu,
04:38but for these people, they can be fatal.
04:41In an earlier encounter,
04:42other uncontacted members of the tribe had seemed aggressive
04:46brandishing a bow and arrow at a bulldozer
04:48from a logging company.
04:55Aramet, the French company that co-owns the mine,
04:58told us the three Hongana-Manyawa
04:59came out of the forest of their own accord.
05:02They say their employees have regular contact
05:05with members of the tribe
05:06and they dispute the term uncontacted.
05:09Survival International say some members of the tribe
05:12have never given consent for the mine
05:13to operate in the area.
05:24The Hongana-Manyawa have no special protection
05:26under Indonesian law,
05:28but a senator has asked the government to step in
05:30to ensure their rights are respected.
05:33Potential investors in the mine also have concerns.
05:36Tesla, which is obviously one of the companies
05:39that may be interested in buying Indonesian nickel,
05:43just recently announced that they're looking at the need
05:48to create no-go zones for mining
05:51where uncontacted indigenous people live.
05:53You've got everybody from Tesla
05:55to the head of the Indonesian Senate
05:58seeing that there is an issue.
06:02That's it for this week.
06:03As always, for more reports from our observers,
