Very quickly, I've always wanted to try this with more than five children, okay, so let's try something.
00:08
Ogi ogi ogi! Oi oi oi!
00:11
Ogi ogi ogi! Oi oi oi!
00:15

00:18
Ogi ogi ogi! Oi oi oi!
00:22
Have you had a good day? Yeah? Fabulous.
00:27
Well, welcome, welcome to the Black Voices Cornwall first ever celebration of Windrush Day.
00:35
It's great to see so many of you here today.
00:38
I'm going to count to three and you're going to shout out the name of your school.
00:42
One, two, three.
00:47
I heard St Mary's.
00:50
Noise on at the back there.
00:53
Well, we are here. We are here to celebrate Windrush today.
00:57
I know some of you have taken part of some fantastic activities.
01:01
There has been some art workshops going on, some music and movement workshops.
01:06
There's been some really impactful conversations going on.
01:11
It's really important for people like myself and some of my team at Black Voices Cornwall to celebrate Windrush
01:18
because we are part of the Windrush generation.
01:22
So, my grandparents, some 75 years ago, came over from the Caribbean
01:30
and that's why I am here in Britain today.
01:34
I've lived in Britain all my life. I've been in Cornwall for most of my life
01:38
so it's really, really pleased to be here with you.
01:41
Are any of you reading any special books about Windrush at the moment?
01:47
Lots of hands.
01:50
What are we reading?
01:52
What are we reading?
01:54
Windrush generation?
01:56
The Windrush Child?
01:58
Anyone else reading Windrush Child?
02:00
Fabulous. Great, great.
02:02
Give me a cheer if you think this is a brilliant book.
02:05
Fabulous.
02:07
Give me a louder cheer if you were part of the workshops today.
02:15
Fabulous. I'm really enjoying making some noise.
02:18
So, you've probably noticed a few people behind me with some fantastic instruments.
02:26
These are steel pans. These are the Steelers. Give us a big cheer for the Steelers.
02:35
So, apparently you've got to sing along a bit later on as well.
02:41
So, the Steelers are a 25 piece band. Have you got 25? Have a quick count up.
02:54
So, slightly fewer than 25 but there are no refunds.
02:59
No refunds today.
03:01
So, how long do you think the Steelers have been going for?
03:09
Somebody said 25 years down the front here. Who was it?
03:12
All of you. Great.
03:14
They have been going indeed for 25 years.
03:17
They are from Trafiglas Academy.
03:22
This is a really special moment for me for a number of reasons.
03:26
My grandad, when he came over, brought one of his steel pans with him from the Caribbean and used to play.
03:33
And it's still in our family today.
03:36
That same steel pan that was crafted over in the Caribbean over 80 years ago.
03:42
So, really, really excited to be here today.
03:44
They perform at all sorts of festivals. Has anyone seen the Steelers before?
03:50
A few of you. A couple of you. That's fabulous.
03:54
But we're going to hear some fantastic music from them.
03:56
So, without much more chat from me, I want the biggest, the loudest, the most Cornish roar you have ever heard and ever delivered.
04:07
Ready? If you're sensitive, brace yourselves.
04:10
But let's hear it for the Steelers!

12:19
The singing's amazing!
12:21
So, we are going to do a song now
12:23
that's a little bit more traditional
12:25
This is a song made famous by a chap
12:27
called Harry Belafonte
12:29
Err... What an amazing man he was
12:31
Look him up if you don't know who he is
12:33
Harry Belafonte
12:35
so this song begins with the drums and it gives us the typical soca rhythm that you associate with
12:44
all of the kind of calypso steel band movements so have a little listen to the drums here
12:54
and you might recognize this rhythm because this rhythm is all out of the pop music your
12:59
singer songs your Ed Sheeran songs your Dua Lipa and let's make it a little more traditional here
13:06
we go jumping alive two comes in one two three go
13:29
so
13:59
so
14:29
so
14:59
so
15:19
so
15:29
so
15:59
so
16:18
