00:00
So I'm Karen from the Mystic Coffee Lounge, a nice little coffee shop in Cosmo High Street.
00:07
Very mystical feel, nice calming atmosphere, been here a year now.
00:13
Lost my mum a few weeks ago, she actually passed on Taser in the Rowan's Hospice.
00:19
So we've made it a bit of a mission, because they're struggling a little bit at the moment,
00:23
we've made it a mission to try and raise some money for them.
00:26
So the 27th of June, 10 till 3, we're going to have a charity day for them.
00:33
Raise as much money as possible, all of the profits are going to Rowan's.
00:37
We've got a raffle with some local businesses that have donated some really lovely prizes.
00:43
Cash prizes, we've got a tattoo, quite a few bits and pieces really, but well worth.
00:48
Pounder tickets are well worth it.
00:50
Okay, so pounder tickets come in and it's going to be mainly a raffle, is that right?
00:53
Yeah, but all the profits from the day are also going to Rowan's as well.
00:57
So we get just as much money as we can get for the money.
01:00
So you've been here a year as well, maybe we could go into a little bit of what makes this cafe so unique.
01:07
Well it's quite a holistic feel, I don't think there's any other, especially not in Gorsemouth,
01:12
there's no one that does the taro and the coffee in the same place.
01:16
All our crystals, I think it makes it a very calming atmosphere.
01:19
The amount of people that come in and say they find it a very calming atmosphere, and I agree with that as well.
01:25
The minute I walked in I knew this was somewhere that I wanted to be.
01:28
I had three years at Costa as well, so that's where I got all my barista training from.
01:32
But yeah, do really well with the food and the coffee.
01:36
We get a lot of good comments about the coffee that I make.
01:39
So you've been here a year, so have you made any changes yourself?
01:45
Yeah, when I came in Kate had it the way that she wanted.
01:49
I've kept in her parameters, but yeah, just upgraded it all really.
01:53
Got a nice coffee machine, collecting my little class.
01:57
I've even got customers that manage to bring those in for me as well.
02:00
When they go on holiday they'll bring me back a little espresso cup, and I love that.
02:04
I love getting them all in on it.
02:07
Yeah, perfect, and obviously the taro side, is that quite popular as well?
02:12
Definitely, that's why I ended up here, because Kate's always fully booked.
02:16
She hadn't had time to do the coffee side of things, so that's when I came in.
02:21
So it's freed her up a little bit as well.
02:23
She's managed to do little side projects of books and taro cards, and all sorts of love.
02:28
She's always on the go, that one.
02:30
And do you have quite a lot of regular customers that come through?
02:33
Absolutely, yes, yes we do. We have a nice little break with clients now that come in.
02:37
I've got to say, mostly older people, but I don't mind that.
02:41
We sit and have a chat, and put the world to right, so we're good at that.
02:45
Politics, religion, it all goes around in here.
02:48
I try and stay clear of those, so I don't get a little bit heated sometimes, oh my goodness.
02:52
But you said as well, there's quite a bit of competition down this road as well.
02:56
There is, there is. We've got the Palace, Costa itself, Greggs.
03:02
There was Subway, I think that's gone now though.
03:04
But yeah, quite a few, and people choose to come here, and I like that.
03:09
Thank you very much.
03:11
So my name's Kate Mayne, and I've been in this industry for about 15 years now, working professionally.
03:18
Had the shop six years this month.
03:20
Oh six years, so quite a long time then.
03:23
Yes.
03:24
That's gone through quite a difficult period as well, in terms of Covid and things like that.
03:27
Yeah, actually we were really fortunate.
03:29
So we'd been here maybe two years when it was Covid,
03:35
and we were able to get a lot of the support that the government passed.
03:39
So we were definitely one of the lucky ones.
03:41
And because I could still do things online, I could still do readings online, the stock we could still sell.
03:48
We were able to do, once a week I think we did, takeaway coffees,
03:53
where people could come and collect the stock that they'd ordered.
03:56
So we were definitely one of the lucky ones.
03:58
And when we came back, everybody came back, and more to support us again.
04:03
So that was alright, it wasn't too bad.
04:05
And your focus now is on the tarot side of it.
04:08
Yes.
04:09
So what kind of services do you offer?
04:10
So predominantly tarot, psychic medium readings.
04:13
When I brought Karen in about a year ago, like she said, it was because it was just getting one of the two.
04:19
I don't even like coffee, and I can't cook, so I don't know what I was thinking originally.
04:23
But it seemed to work for quite a few years, to be fair.
04:25
But I knew that that side of business needed someone to focus 100% on it.
04:30
I knew I had good potential.
04:32
And then I could concentrate on doing the tarot readings, psychic readings.
04:37
And I've wrote some books about tarot cards, and obviously selling the stock.
04:41
So yeah, to kind of have two separate businesses worked.
04:45
How busy are you on the tarot side?
04:47
Yeah, quite busy.
04:48
It's a big industry.
04:50
Portsmouth particularly is big in Portsmouth.
04:55
And again, Touchwood, really fortunate that I've been able to do it for many, many years without really struggling for it.
05:04
So yeah, I got in Touchwood.
05:07
Good reputation.
05:09
People seem to like me, like what I do, like I was saying.
05:12
But yeah, and I think when you love doing something, it doesn't feel like a job anyway, does it?
05:16
It feels really, yeah, it's alright.
05:19
For those that don't know, what actually is a tarot reading?
05:21
So a tarot reading, so it looks at what's going on around you.
05:24
There's different spreads for different things.
05:26
But predominantly, it looks at what's going on in your life now, what's coming up in the future.
05:30
It gives you guidance and help around situations where there might be choices and decisions to make.
05:36
And the mediumship is proving life after death.
05:39
Letting people connect to their loved ones that have passed over with evidence.
05:44
And bridging that gap between the two worlds.
05:48
And do you just kind of pre-book that type of thing?
05:51
Yes.
05:52
There is odd chances of walk-ins.
05:54
But most of it is booked through my website on the calendar.
05:58
Is that Mystic Coffee?
06:00
No, it's cakemay.co.uk.
06:02
And the Coffee Lounge comes under that as well.
06:04
So we used to have two websites, but running the two was too much.
06:08
So I just amalgamated it into one, cakemay.co.uk, and it's all in there.
06:12
That's perfect. Thank you very much.
06:18
Thank you.
