00:00 [MUSIC PLAYING]
00:03 Yeah, it means a lot to me.
00:05 Been trying to do better at being
00:07 consistent in the big tournaments,
00:09 and I'm reaching that level of consistency.
00:12 Obviously, very happy to reach the semifinal,
00:15 and sure, everybody knows I wanted to go all the way.
00:17 Hey, Coco, well done today.
00:25 I realize this is sort of routine for you,
00:27 but it's kind of a long day looking at it from the outside.
00:32 Can you sort of take us through what
00:35 this day looks like for you?
00:37 What time do you wake up?
00:38 When do you eat?
00:39 When did you get here, like into your singles match,
00:42 and then the time between?
00:44 Do you eat lunch before then, and just sort of how
00:47 you survive for eight hours, or whatever it is,
00:51 10 hours at this level?
00:52 Yeah, I mean, it goes by really fast, I will say.
00:56 When you're playing the match, it just goes by really fast.
00:59 I think I got here 8.15 probably this morning,
01:04 and I warmed up at 9.15, and then played at 11,
01:09 and finished around 1.15, and then played doubles at 3.15.
01:13 A lot of 15s, but that's what happened today.
01:17 And yeah, and I have physio.
01:20 It's pretty normal.
01:21 I mean, honestly, I prefer to double up sometimes,
01:25 then go once every day.
01:27 But I know they're backed up because of the rain.
01:30 So I knew that going into the tournament.
01:32 But honestly, doubles, it doesn't take, for me,
01:35 that much energy, especially with playing with Katerina.
01:38 She's obviously a very accomplished doubles player.
01:41 So I feel like I let her do her thing,
01:44 and I just kind of try to do my best
01:47 to hold up my end of the court.
01:49 And this is just the waking up, and the eating, and stuff
01:52 like that?
01:53 Oh, yeah.
01:54 I ate before my singles, and I ate before my doubles.
01:57 And I don't know what time I woke up.
01:59 I think I went to bed at 10.30 last night,
02:01 and woke up at 7, probably.
02:04 So yeah, that's like 8 and 1/2 hours of sleep,
02:07 which is pretty good.
02:08 I usually try to get between 8 or 9.
02:10 So yeah, it's not as complicated as it may seem.
02:15 Congrats.
02:18 Thanks.
02:19 When you're down a set in a big match like this,
02:22 I'm curious how your, I guess, management
02:23 of these moments has changed over your career,
02:26 like how stressed or not stressed you are,
02:29 and how that has evolved.
02:31 Yeah, she played really well, honestly, the whole match,
02:34 but especially the first set.
02:35 I think she-- the first three games,
02:38 I don't even think I saw a second serve.
02:39 Maybe.
02:40 I don't recall.
02:42 I think she was serving like 80-something, 84%,
02:45 and serving really well.
02:46 So when you lose a set like that,
02:49 it's kind of just-- you just try to brush it off.
02:51 And I know that I should have held serve, especially
02:54 that one-- the game I got broken.
02:56 I think I had a couple of game points.
02:57 So it's just one of those things.
02:59 I played one bad--
03:01 maybe not even game, but a couple of points.
03:03 And she played a great set.
03:04 And it's kind of just like, if she
03:06 can sustain this level the whole match, and then she deserves it.
03:09 And if my level doesn't rise, then I deserve to lose.
03:12 So I knew I had to raise my level.
03:14 And I think-- and because I raised my level,
03:16 I think her-- she kind of--
03:18 I just started to play more aggressive,
03:20 and not letting her dictate me off the court.
03:23 And I know she's going to hit some great shots.
03:25 Like, a couple of forehand winners she hit.
03:28 And I'm just like, there's nothing I can do.
03:30 And same with the drop shots.
03:31 When you play her, you know you're
03:33 going to get a couple of drop shot winners.
03:35 And yeah.
03:37 Next question over here.
03:39 Congratulations.
03:40 Iga said earlier that she thinks your mental game has improved
03:43 over the course of the 11 times you guys have met.
03:46 Is that something which you can see as well?
03:48 Yeah, I definitely think--
03:49 and I don't know if it's something
03:50 I actively worked on, or if it's just maturity over the years.
03:54 I think you just get older and learn how to handle
03:57 the pressures a little bit more.
03:59 I wouldn't say it's something that I like.
04:01 I don't have a mental coach or anything
04:04 like that sports related.
04:06 But it is something that I knew I had to improve and just
04:09 be more positive.
04:10 But I think it just also came with maturity and realizing
04:14 that I can't beat myself and also my opponent beating me.
04:18 Question in the middle.
04:19 Hi, Iga.
04:20 Hi, Coco.
04:21 Just thinking ahead to your matches against Iga.
04:25 A feature here last year was you were really
04:28 looping a lot of balls.
04:29 And whereas in Rome recently, you kind of
04:31 came out crushing the ball.
04:33 I'm not expecting you to reveal your tactic,
04:34 but I'm just wondering whether you
04:36 have a clear idea in your mind of now
04:38 like how to approach facing Giante Concle.
04:41 Yeah, I definitely think I have to find--
04:44 you know, a better way to play her than the last times
04:48 I played on clay because I've obviously been unsuccessful
04:50 the last couple of times we've played regardless
04:53 of the surface and anything.
04:56 So she's definitely a tough opponent for me and for anybody.
05:01 But yeah, I think for me, I just have to go back and watch
05:03 and try to find what I have to do.
05:07 I think she's playing great tennis here,
05:09 so it's going to be a challenge.
05:10 But I'm going to go into the match with a lot of belief
05:12 that I can, and I'm going to try to get a plan from my team
05:18 and then also my own plan and see
05:20 where we can find the blend.
05:22 Howard?
05:22 I wanted to ask you something else,
05:28 but let me start by following up on that and asking you,
05:30 when will you or have you started
05:34 thinking about that plan or talking to your coaches
05:36 about it?
05:39 Just now when he asked me the question,
05:41 I just finished doubles an hour ago.
05:44 And I don't really think about the next match
05:47 until maybe the night before because I think it's just part
05:51 of my process of enjoying every match with everyone
05:55 and trying not to think too far ahead.
05:57 And unrelated to your progress here,
06:01 I wanted to ask if you had heard about Novak Djokovic
06:05 withdrawing from the tournament and your reaction to that news.
06:09 Yeah, I saw-- actually, no, Brad was actually
06:12 the first person to tell me.
06:13 He's always on top of everything that's going on on site.
06:16 So I was very surprised.
06:19 And I watched this match against the last two sets or three
06:23 sets against Sarandolo.
06:25 And yeah, I mean, I saw that he was obviously physically
06:29 struggling.
06:30 And I honestly thought--
06:31 I think everybody thought he was probably on the-- well,
06:33 not everybody.
06:34 But I thought he was on the verge of losing.
06:36 And I don't know, something about him--
06:38 and I thought when you get through a match like that,
06:40 that he would win the title.
06:41 But obviously, I feel like I don't
06:44 want to put any words in his mouth.
06:46 But I think it probably came just from the late start.
06:49 And it was unfortunate that he had to--
06:51 the matches went five sets back to back.
06:53 So I think it was just a combination of those two
06:56 things.
06:57 Hopefully, the injury is not too serious
06:59 and he can be ready for Wimbledon.
07:02 Hello, Coco.
07:03 I have a question about Mira Andreeva.
07:06 She became yesterday the third player in the last 18 years
07:11 to make quarterfinals at Roland-Garros.
07:16 Before turning 18, you are one of these three players.
07:21 My question is, do you remember or did you
07:24 manage with the pressure around these games at a tournament
07:28 like Roland-Garros?
07:29 And what do you think about the evolution of Mira,
07:35 if you could have seen these games?
07:38 Yeah, I remember when I had made my first quarterfinal,
07:41 I felt like the title was so close and it was so far.
07:45 So the only advice I think would just stay in the moment
07:49 and believe that you make it.
07:52 But don't think about the end, because sometimes you
07:55 hear the word final and you just think you're so close.
07:57 And you are.
07:58 But like Heinz said, it's a long journey from that point.
08:01 And I played her here last year.
08:03 And we had a tough three-set match.
08:05 And I think she's a great player.
08:07 And I played her in US Open.
08:09 And that one was a little bit more straightforward.
08:11 But it's nice to see how she's constantly
08:15 improving with each week.
08:16 And I hope that she can sustain it,
08:19 because sometimes I know from being there,
08:21 the pressures and everything can be a lot.
08:23 So I think just if I was on her team,
08:26 I would just take care of the mental first
08:28 and the emotional first before tennis and all of that,
08:31 because it's a long career that she will have.
08:36 And I think she's going to have a successful one.
08:38 And she's obviously a great player,
08:40 doing so many good things young.
08:41 So hopefully she can continue here.
08:43 Hello, Coco.
08:47 It's Przemek Pozowski from Tok FM Poland.
08:50 There were some questions about Iga, but I will do one more.
08:53 What do you think about her playing this Rolanda Ross?
08:56 She was on the verge with Naomi Osaka.
08:58 Then she put up over 40 minutes today
09:00 with the Wimbledon champion, 6-0, 6-2.
09:03 Does it impress you?
09:05 Does it make you a little bit more stressful?
09:07 And how do you deal with that, that you
09:10 know that you're going to play the player that you
09:15 lost 10 times?
09:16 Yeah, for me--
09:18 nice way to word it.
09:21 I mean, no, I mean, look, she's obviously
09:23 number one in the world.
09:24 And she won this tournament, like, what, three times already.
09:29 And I think for me, I'm just going in with it
09:32 with confidence.
09:32 And I mean, when I played her in Cincinnati,
09:35 I didn't go into the match thinking,
09:36 oh, I never beaten her before, never taken a set off of her.
09:39 So I can't think about past players.
09:43 Podopova isn't me.
09:44 I'm not Vondrasova.
09:46 Doesn't mean anything that I'm going to-- maybe I could lose
09:48 with the same score, maybe not.
09:50 But I'm just going to go in and just try to win.
09:53 And I have nothing to lose, all the pressure's on her.
09:57 So yeah.
09:59 Hello, Coco.
10:00 Congrats.
10:01 You enjoyed the atmosphere today.
10:02 How's it like to play against Ance
10:04 in front of a lot of Tunisian fans?
10:06 Second question is about the NBA finals.
10:08 Who are you rooting for, Males or Celtics?
10:11 What was the last question?
10:12 NBA finals.
10:12 Oh, NBA finals.
10:13 Oh my gosh, I forgot.
10:15 Yeah.
10:16 Yeah, OK.
10:17 First, playing in front of the Tunisian fans were great.
10:20 And I know Ance has very--
10:23 Tunisia is a very patriotic country.
10:25 And she's kind of the icon there.
10:28 So I knew going in, it was going to be a lot of people
10:30 cheering for her.
10:31 And it was very fun to play in front of a crowd like that.
10:34 They were very passionate about her,
10:37 but not disrespectful towards me or anything.
10:39 So I think that's what makes matches super fun,
10:42 to play in when it's such a fun environment and everybody's--
10:47 I think in my post-match interview,
10:49 I said that they were against me.
10:50 But I didn't mean it to word it like that.
10:52 It was more that they were for Ance.
10:54 So I think that was really cool.
10:55 And for the NBA finals, ooh, there's Mavericks and Celtics.
11:02 I think I'm going to go for the Mavericks, just because I
11:04 like Kyrie Irving a lot.
11:06 And I met him a couple of years ago.
11:09 So yeah, I mean, I'm not 100% for one team.
11:14 I'm a Heat fan.
11:15 And we lost first round.
11:17 But maybe next season.
11:20 Last question.
11:21 Yeah, just curious about your conversations
11:23 with your brothers the last few days.
11:25 I mean, if you talked to them today yet.
11:27 And what's the nature of those chats back and forth?
11:32 Yeah, well, Cody, who's 16 years old--
11:35 or no, yeah, he's 16 years old.
11:37 And he doesn't answer the phone ever.
11:40 I haven't spoken to him on the phone, probably in two or three
11:42 weeks, because he's doing his thing.
11:45 Or he'll text me after a match.
11:46 And he'll literally say, good win, Jit.
11:48 And Jit is like a slang in Florida.
11:52 I don't even know what it means, how to explain it.
11:54 But that's literally the last four or five texts from him.
11:58 And then Cameron, he's the youngest.
11:59 And he'll call.
12:00 I think I tried to call him yesterday.
12:02 But he was playing Fortnite.
12:04 And so we talked.
12:06 And then he kind of just wasn't talking
12:08 for like five or 10 minutes.
12:10 He was like, I think I'll call you tomorrow.
12:13 Because he was busy playing Fortnite with his friend.
12:15 And he has not called me today yet.
12:18 And tomorrow's his birthday.
12:19 So I'm going to wish him happy birthday.
12:21 And I have some gifts coming for him tomorrow.
12:23 But yeah, that's kind of our dynamic.
12:25 And Cody, typical teenager.
12:28 And Cameron just being a kid that loves Fortnite.
12:32 Thank you, everyone.
12:33 Thanks.
12:34 Thank you.
12:34 [MUSIC PLAYING]
