Joe Biden says Israel has agreed to Gaza ceasefire proposal

US President Joe Biden has endorsed an Israeli proposal for a ceasefire in Gaza, saying it's time for the war to end.

00:00 This is an Israeli proposal conveyed to Hamas via Qatar, but the detail has actually come

00:09 US President Joe Biden outlined the roadmap.

00:14 He said that it would involve a six-week ceasefire as the first phase.

00:19 During that six weeks, there would be the release of some hostages and Israeli forces

00:23 would withdraw from populated areas of Gaza.

00:27 And over that time, or for longer if that's what it took to reach an agreement, negotiations

00:32 would continue towards an enduring and permanent ceasefire.

00:36 And the release of all hostages and a complete withdrawal of Israel from Gaza.

00:43 The third stage down the track would be a reconstruction.

00:47 Now the office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has released a statement confirming

00:52 that Israeli negotiators have been authorised to put a proposal forward.

00:57 It didn't go into anywhere near the amount of detail that Joe Biden did.

01:01 It did say though that Israel won't end its war until all its objectives are met.

01:08 Joe Biden says that Israel has met its objectives in Gaza.

01:12 He said that today, Hamas would be in no position to launch the October 7 attack that they launched

01:19 last year.

01:20 He said that Israel has devastated the Hamas forces to such an extent that its citizens

01:25 didn't have to live in fear about their security now.

01:29 And that's why it's time for the war to be brought to an end.

01:32 Joe Biden said today that he wants the day after to begin.

01:43 Israel has made their proposal.

01:46 Hamas says it wants a ceasefire.

01:49 This deal is an opportunity to prove whether they really mean it.

01:57 For months, people all over the world have called for a ceasefire.

02:01 Now it's time to raise your voices and demand that Hamas come to the table, agrees to this

02:08 deal and end this war that they began.

02:14 Hamas had said earlier this week that it was done negotiating until there was an end to

02:21 the ongoing aggression.

02:22 But it said today in a statement that it is ready to deal positively with any proposal

02:29 that offers a permanent ceasefire with a serious exchange of hostages and prisoners and a complete

02:34 withdrawal of Israel from Gaza.

02:38 So we'll have to see where these negotiations end up.

02:40 This is certainly not a done deal at this stage, but there will be pressure from the

02:45 international community.

02:47 We can see from Biden's comments today that there will be pressure from America, Israel's

02:51 key ally, to get this deal done and try to bring this eight-month-old war to an end.
