Norway, Spain and Ireland to recognize State of Palestine

Norway, Spain and Ireland say they will formally recognize the State of Palestine on May 28, 2024. Israel strongly opposes the move, arguing that it amounts to "rewarding terrorism" after the Palestinian militant group Hamas launched its unprecedented October 7 attack on Israel. This sparked the bloodiest-ever Gaza war, with a death toll of more than 35,700 people, as announced by the Hamas-run health ministry in Gaza on May 22.

00:00 The government has decided that Norway will recognize the state of Palestine.
00:06 Norway's recognition will take effect on May 28.
00:11 With that, Norway will consider Palestine as an independent, independent state with all the rights and duties that this entails.
00:20 A Palestinian state is obliged in the trust of the people to live in peace within safe, internationally recognized borders,
00:29 and to follow all relevant UN resolutions.
00:33 That is why, ladies and gentlemen, I want to inform you that after having agreed on the decision between the two parties that we form,
00:41 the Progressive Coalition Government, and echoing the majority feeling of the Spanish people,
00:47 on Tuesday, May 28, Spain will approve in its Council of Ministers the recognition of the state of Palestine.
00:55 On the 21st of January 1919, Ireland asked the world to recognize our right to be an independent state.
01:09 Our message to the free nations of the world was a plea for international recognition of our independence,
01:15 emphasizing our distinct national identity, our historical struggle, and our right to self-determination and justice.
01:23 Today, we use the same language to support the recognition of Palestine as a state.
01:30 We do so because we believe in freedom and justice as the fundamental principles of international law,
01:40 and because we believe that permanent peace can only be secured upon the basis of the free will of a free people.
01:49 Thank you.
