00:00 It's very important to, as I mentioned, to provide the space for the private sector to

00:06 deliver in a sustainable manner.

00:08 For us as United Nations, what matters is that when the country transits, whether on

00:13 climate or on the education, that transition, which is inevitable, is just and equitable

00:21 so that it also delivers for all the people.

00:26 How do you see the measures that Egypt has taken recently in terms of economic reform,

00:30 and of course the most important one is the freeing of the currency and the impact on the

00:35 performance of the private sector in Egypt?

00:37 We are very encouraged, we are very glad that the country is really embarking on these pathways

00:45 of economic structural reforms.

00:49 And of course the private sector again is critical because when we are talking about

00:54 a healthy and inclusive economy that creates jobs, it has to be the private sector at the

01:03 core.

01:04 So we are very encouraged by the recent steps that the government has taken in order to

01:10 expand the space for the private sector, the state-owned policy that the government is

01:18 now implementing as we speak, and many other reforms, if we talk about, for example, manufacturing,

01:28 if we talk about IT, if we talk about agriculture, everywhere I believe we will see more private

01:36 sector coming in.

01:37 But how do you see in the United Nations the impact of the current geopolitical tensions

01:41 on the performance of the Egyptian economy and also its ability to co-ordinate and remain

01:45 in the face of these challenges?

01:49 There is a report that the United Nations Development System just published with regard

01:53 to this, a huge impact.

01:55 Because if you look, first, you know, if you look at the two doorsteps of Egypt-Sudan,

02:01 a huge influx, more than 500,000 Sudanese refugees that resided, that flee, you know,

02:07 to Egypt, and that means a lot of pressure on the health, on the social, on the educational

02:13 systems of the country.

02:15 So it's a huge burden.

02:16 And we need to realize this.

02:18 It's a huge burden also on the host community.

02:21 So that's why we are encouraging the development partners, the donor communities, to invest

02:25 and to support Egypt, because Egypt is a good host.

02:28 There are no camps, right?

02:30 A good host to all these refugees.

02:32 If you look Gaza, again, on the doorstep, doorstep of Egypt, huge impact, regretfully.

02:38 Tourism is one, and of course, most important is the Suez Canal.

02:43 So all this, you know, inevitably impacts Egypt, but we believe that the international

02:51 community will stand behind Egypt and support Egypt so that Egypt can overcome this.
