Aqua aerobics making a comback across SA

Staying fit and healthy past your 50's can be tricky but a particular fitness class is making it easy for people to dip their toes into exercise. Get your cossies on, because aqua aerobics is making a comeback across south Australia.

00:00 It's a fitness activity on the rise, testing the stamina of thousands of Australians every

00:09 I just love it. I do about eight to ten classes in five days. So it just gives you stability

00:14 and friendship and a bit of a laugh.

00:18 Classes have been growing over the past year, with almost 80% of aquatic facilities and

00:23 swim schools across the country offering water aerobic sessions.

00:27 Pre-COVID everything was around a 50% attender mark and now you're looking overall around

00:32 the 82% across the board.

00:34 Apart from strengthening the muscles, aqua aerobics helps to improve balance, heart health

00:39 and independence for people of all ages. And experts say the benefits are more than physical.

00:46 It's not just looking at cardiovascular fitness or strength or balance, it's looking at mental

00:52 health and wellbeing and having a purpose and catching up with people.

00:56 While aqua aerobics classes are a fixture in capital cities around Australia, people

01:01 in regional communities are increasingly taking to the pool to stay fit. And some swimming

01:06 centres are struggling to keep up with demand.

01:09 From when I first started we barely had anyone coming in. Up until now we have about 20,

01:16 sometimes even 30 people in the pool.

01:18 Arthritis sufferer Brett Rogers tried aqua aerobics to ease his pain. Now he and his

01:24 wife Sue drive to Renmark for weekly classes.

01:27 Although we live just out of Balmora, we don't mind the trouble because the benefits outweigh.
