Not enough green areas in your city? A team of Serbian scientists may have the answer: a "tree" in liquid form that they say could help improve urban air quality.

00:00 It has no leaves, no trunk and no roots, and yet this unusual contraption acts like a tree.

00:08 This green aquarium in the centre of Belgrade contains microalgae that bind carbon dioxide and produce oxygen using photosynthesis.

00:17 Its inventor is biophysicist Ivan Spasojevic, who is looking for an alternative concept for green spaces.

00:25 The first important thing is that the liquid 3 does not serve to change the tree.

00:31 The liquid 3 is designed to target areas where you cannot put a normal tree.

00:35 For example, here where we are standing now, we have two trees, and the space between them cannot be used for a third tree,

00:39 because the cross would bend and the tree could not grow.

00:42 The liquid 3 is also multifunctional.

00:47 It serves as a bench, includes a charger for smartphones, and has a solar panel that generates power for street lights at night.

00:55 As it purifies the air, the green colour becomes stronger.

01:01 The goal of the liquid 3 is to send a message that it is important to fight for better quality of urban air,

01:06 that the protection of the environment is important, and I think that the liquid 3 is sending such a message.
