00:00:00 Good morning.
00:00:03 And a very special good morning
00:00:18 to the rest of the world. I'm
00:00:19 Marlon Hopkins and as always,
00:00:20 welcome to the morning edition.
00:00:22 It's Monday, May 13th, 2024 and
00:00:26 thank you very much for joining
00:00:27 us this morning. We do
00:00:28 appreciate it. How are the
00:00:29 mothers this morning? I know
00:00:30 some of you are tired. Some of
00:00:32 you can't go to work this
00:00:34 morning, you know, because you
00:00:35 all would have celebrated
00:00:36 yesterday. You know, I know some
00:00:38 people with large families and
00:00:40 the mothers have to cook or had
00:00:42 to cook yesterday and I know
00:00:44 that some who were cooked for
00:00:47 yeah, the vex this morning
00:00:49 because you know, the children
00:00:50 didn't make the food or how they
00:00:51 were supposed to make it. So,
00:00:53 you know, you have to balance
00:00:54 off the thing but to all the
00:00:55 mothers, thank you very much
00:00:57 again. Thank you for all of the
00:00:58 contributions that you continue
00:01:00 to make. Yeah. And you know,
00:01:03 congratulations to all of you.
00:01:05 Yeah. And you know, also, it was
00:01:07 a good thing that yesterday that
00:01:09 the family could have spent some
00:01:11 time together. I think that
00:01:13 sometimes we don't understand

00:01:17 know, when you get some free
00:01:19 time, always spend some time
00:01:21 with your family. Alright. How
00:01:23 was the weather? The weather is
00:01:24 treating you all well. Yeah. I
00:01:26 took the chance on Friday. I
00:01:28 attended Sports Day on Friday

00:01:51 we have our bodies are
00:01:54 sensitizing to what is happening

00:01:58 saw on Friday and I thought was

00:02:02 to speak about that was so many
00:02:05 fathers I saw at the Sports Day

00:02:12 stayed away from work to spend

01:35:48 which is based in Madison, Wisconsin.

01:35:54 for credit unions and their members for several years,
01:35:57 and operates in 12 territories across the Caribbean.
01:36:00 Joining us now is Lizette Maxim-Hernandez,
01:36:03 the Manager of Business Development.
01:36:06 Thank you very much for coming this morning.
01:36:08 Thank you for having me.
01:36:09 Yeah, and we are specifically speaking this morning
01:36:12 about the Family Indemnity Plan and Critical Illness Insurance.
01:36:17 Yes.
01:36:18 Yeah? Let's get into it. Tell us about it.
01:36:20 Okay, so as we are born and experience a thing called life,
01:36:25 we unfortunately don't know when our expiry dates are.
01:36:29 But it's certain, our expiry dates are certain.
01:36:33 So our Family Indemnity Plan caters for final expenses
01:36:37 when that time comes, that we are able to have a good send-off,
01:36:42 we are able to pay for things like the probate of a will
01:36:46 or letters of administration, or in Trinidad culture,
01:36:50 the experience of a week, little debts or so forth
01:36:53 that the loved one may have had.
01:36:55 That's what final expenses and the Indemnity Plan
01:36:58 will take care of.
01:37:00 And in terms of the critical illness plans, however,
01:37:03 I know that we have seen younger people, a lot more people,
01:37:07 come down with what we call the "Big Six,"
01:37:10 cancer, heart attack, stroke, paralysis, major burns, comas.
01:37:14 And our critical illness plans do cover those Big Six
01:37:18 and making sure that the families can cope and provide
01:37:22 for daily support should someone get one of those diseases
01:37:27 or inflicted with one of those illnesses,
01:37:30 as well as helping to secure treatment for persons.
01:37:33 Yeah. All right, so let's separate them.
01:37:36 And let's speak about the Family Indemnity Plan first.
01:37:41 What's the criteria to be absorbed into that plan,
01:37:47 and what is the premium like?
01:37:49 Well, our plans cover--you start from age 1.
01:37:53 You can enroll from age 1.
01:37:55 You must be a member of a family unit,
01:37:58 and it's a 3-generational family unit.
01:38:00 So I could cover my parents, myself and my spouse,
01:38:03 and as well I could cover my children under that plan
01:38:06 for one singular payment.
01:38:09 Payments run from $52.80 that covers that family of 6
01:38:14 all the way up to $528 that covers that same family of 6.
01:38:19 The insured amounts vary from $10,000 to $100,000 per person.
01:38:25 So, for example, if I choose the 528 plan or the Plan G,
01:38:29 I would therefore insure 6 persons in my family
01:38:32 each for $100,000, and every single month I pay only $528.
01:38:38 So you are insuring 6 persons for $100,000 each.
01:38:47 However--but that is covering the expenses
01:38:54 following their demise, right?
01:38:56 Correct.
01:38:58 So 6 persons are covered.
01:39:00 Correct. So if, God forbid, 2 persons were in an accident
01:39:03 at the same time, we would pay 2 benefits,
01:39:06 2 instances of $100,000 each.
01:39:09 Right.
01:39:10 Yeah.
01:39:11 But what if my--or the expenses are less than the $100,000?
01:39:17 Let's say it's $25,000.
01:39:20 What happens to the next $75,000?
01:39:23 Well, that is transparent to us.
01:39:26 So you would have paid for a benefit of $100,000,
01:39:29 and we would pay a benefit of $100,000.
01:39:31 What you can do at that time is invest it
01:39:33 in one of your children's accounts or, you know,
01:39:36 do something that your loved one would have wanted to do for them.
01:39:41 Perhaps they may have a teenager who needs a little car.
01:39:43 You can buy a little car for them or something.
01:39:46 But what is the process in getting those funds?
01:39:50 So you simply make a claim,
01:39:52 and you give us the necessary documents.
01:39:54 You have a death certificate. You have proof of address.
01:39:57 You send the claim in through your unit.
01:39:59 So the plan is available through credit unions, brokerage,
01:40:03 some brokers, funeral homes, certain churches, some employee groups.
01:40:08 Once you go through that policyholder, they send it to us,
01:40:11 and we give you the payment.
01:40:14 We send the payment back through one of those policyholders back to you,
01:40:17 and payments can take anywhere between 2 days to 5 days tops.
01:40:20 Yeah, because that was my next question,
01:40:22 because you don't want a situation where the person has died
01:40:27 and the monies are going to be released maybe in a few weeks
01:40:33 after funeral, even when the person has been laid to rest.
01:40:38 So you don't want a situation like that.
01:40:40 The monies are going to be paid before.
01:40:42 Correct. So I'll give you my example.
01:40:44 So I lost my husband in March,
01:40:46 and I have a FIP, the Family Indemnity Plan,
01:40:49 and bang on the money within 2 days, I got my payment,
01:40:53 was able to send the money to the funeral home
01:40:55 and cover those final expenses and pay for the little puffs and stuff
01:40:58 for when people came over to see the family after.
01:41:02 Yeah, just incidentally, condolences to you, right?
01:41:05 Let's speak about the critical illness insurance now.
01:41:09 Right. So that, again, speaks to the basics.
01:41:13 So you know sometimes you will get critical illness.
01:41:16 For example, you have a heart case, and you rush a person to surgery.
01:41:19 Yes, this could be used to help pay for such an incident,
01:41:23 but there are things that happen thereafter that persons don't think about.
01:41:27 So for example, that person now will probably need to be on medication.
01:41:31 You'd have paid for the surgery, but where's the money for the medication?
01:41:34 Where's the money for the treatment?
01:41:36 Where's the money for the person who may have been--
01:41:40 that person may have been responsible for your duties,
01:41:42 you don't have to pay a workman.
01:41:44 Where's that money coming from?
01:41:46 So that critical illness fund, or the funds from the family critical illness plan,
01:41:51 helps towards not just the treatment of the critical illness,
01:41:55 but also all those things surrounding it.
01:41:57 If that person needed to fly out, for example, for treatment,
01:42:00 for subsequent treatment, all of that can be covered
01:42:03 from our family critical illness plan.
01:42:05 Right. But let's speak about the criteria now.
01:42:08 So is it that the person who wants this plan,
01:42:12 they are going to have to subject themselves to certain tests and so on?
01:42:17 There's no medical required for either the family indemnity,
01:42:20 neither for the family critical illness plan.
01:42:23 But how is that possible?
01:42:25 Just ask Kuna. Kuna makes it possible.
01:42:27 Just ask Kuna.
01:42:29 There is a caveat, however.
01:42:31 If you sign up for the critical illness plan,
01:42:33 and you knowingly were in the receipt of treatment
01:42:36 for one of the critical illnesses,
01:42:39 that would bar you from having that person from having coverage.
01:42:43 Let's go through what it covers again.
01:42:46 So cancer, heart attack, stroke, paralysis, major burns, and coma.
01:42:52 Okay. And what's the premiums like?
01:42:54 So you can cover a family of four for less than $160 per month.
01:42:59 Four persons. A family of four.
01:43:01 A family of four--mother, father, daughter, son,
01:43:04 or however the family is constituted.
01:43:07 But what's the coverage like for them, each person?
01:43:11 So you can have coverage from $50,000 per person
01:43:14 all the way up to $300,000 per person.
01:43:17 Our critical illness coverage is age-banded, however.
01:43:21 So you have lesser premiums that you pay once you're less than 35,
01:43:25 and of course a little bit more expensive once you get a little older.
01:43:30 If it's for people--if it's like a healthy individual
01:43:35 who is approaching the age of 50, what would that be like?
01:43:40 Those premiums are about $200 and something per person.
01:43:45 This sounds amazing, wouldn't you say?
01:43:48 It is. It is.
01:43:50 Don't you all find it's amazing?
01:43:54 Because usually--well, it's for $300,000, right?
01:43:58 Yes, it goes up to $300,000.
01:44:00 So you can choose what coverage you would like.
01:44:02 So you can take $50,000, $100,000, $200,000, and go all the way up.
01:44:07 And you don't have to necessarily--
01:44:10 so is it that someone can cover--
01:44:17 and you mentioned family members--
01:44:20 so you can cover each family member for $300,000?
01:44:25 Yes, you can.
01:44:26 So once you're the primary insured, you can cover anyone else in your family
01:44:30 for that amount or less if you wish.
01:44:33 So if, for example, you think, "Well, I'm working,
01:44:35 and I need to be the primary breadwinner,"
01:44:38 I will cover myself for $100,000, and I'll cover each child for $50,000.
01:44:42 You can do that.
01:44:43 You have the flexibility in the plan to be able to do that.
01:44:47 Yeah.
01:44:48 And if it is that someone gets ill,
01:44:53 the monies that you give to the relatives for that particular individual,
01:44:59 it does not affect the coverage of the other individuals, right?
01:45:03 No, it doesn't.
01:45:05 And something interesting I'd like to say that is unique about our plan,
01:45:09 that if there are no claims made by the time the plan ends, which is age 75,
01:45:14 we give you back 50% of all premiums paid.
01:45:19 So if you know you're going to keep yourself healthy,
01:45:21 you could think of it as a nice little savings plan for yourself.
01:45:24 Yeah.
01:45:25 All right, so tell us, how do people sign up for these plans
01:45:31 that you have given information about this morning?
01:45:34 Sure.
01:45:35 You can contact any one of our policyholders, all credit unions.
01:45:40 We have a couple insurance brokers.
01:45:43 We have some funeral homes, and, of course,
01:45:45 the employee groups would--you would know if you were covered through them.
01:45:50 You can contact me directly if you're unsure of how to go about it.
01:45:53 My number is 385-1754--385-1754, in case someone's writing.
01:46:01 Or you can contact us via WhatsApp at 336-KUNA,

01:46:12 or you can look at my personal Instagram page, Liz from KUNA.
01:46:17 Yeah.
01:46:18 Is there anything else you think that we did not touch on
01:46:21 that you would like to speak about before you leave us this morning?
01:46:24 Or we'll be thorough enough?
01:46:26 I think you were thorough, but I think that it's important
01:46:29 that persons understand the KUNAs for all people.
01:46:32 Our plans are affordable.
01:46:34 Our plans meet your financial needs,
01:46:37 and our plans can help you plan a legacy of love
01:46:41 and of good, sound financial standing for your family.
01:46:45 But you spoke about members of credit unions
01:46:50 and people who are associated with funeral homes and so on.
01:46:54 Can just a normal person just walk into KUNA and ask for these plans?
01:46:59 You can ask us about the plans, but we transact through our policyholders.
01:47:04 So if you wish and you contact me, I will guide you through the process
01:47:08 of which is the best policyholder for you.
01:47:11 And had I known, I would have walked with my little booklet
01:47:14 and signed you up today.
01:47:16 Yeah?
01:47:17 Yeah.
01:47:18 Do you want to sign me up?
01:47:20 Thank you very much for coming this morning, right?
01:47:23 You're most welcome.
01:47:24 I think it has been very, very informative,
01:47:27 and I'm sure that persons are very much interested in it.
01:47:30 So thank you very much again.
01:47:31 Okay, thank you very much, Marno.

01:49:48 Slavery, a terrible time in our history.
01:49:52 The kidnapping, buying and selling of people for profit,
01:49:56 the exploitation of another human being.
01:49:59 It still exists today.
01:50:01 It has a new name--human trafficking.
01:50:04 Anyone can be a victim.
01:50:07 There is forced labor, sexual exploitation, and domestic servitude.
01:50:15 Human trafficking is a worldwide problem
01:50:17 and an emerging concern for us here in Trinidad and Tobago.
01:50:22 If you know of or suspect human trafficking activity,
01:50:25 call the counter-trafficking hotline at 800-4CTU or 800-4288.
01:50:32 Human trafficking is a crime.
01:50:34 Identify it. Report it. Stop it.

01:50:43 [music]
01:51:00 All right, so welcome back, everyone.
01:51:01 We do have some local news for you.
01:51:04 [music]
01:51:13 Good morning.
01:51:14 With your TV6 News Update to the hour, I am Renessa Cutting.
01:51:19 Two police officers are to appear before the court today
01:51:23 charged with misbehavior in public office.
01:51:26 According to a release from the TTPS,
01:51:29 on May 10th, Corporal Amanda Williams and Constable Kavon Sinjan
01:51:34 were apprehended and formally charged with larceny of U.S. currency.
01:51:39 This after reports of alleged offenses were filed against several officers of the Western Division.
01:51:45 The release states that on Tuesday, March 19th, and on April 9th,
01:51:49 a man reported being stopped by police officers,
01:51:52 who informed him that they had received information
01:51:55 that he was in possession of an illegal firearm and ammunition.
01:52:00 However, on both occasions, police searched his vehicle
01:52:03 and confiscated envelopes containing U.S. cash
01:52:06 valued at 17,000 U.S. dollars and 20,175 U.S. dollars, respectively.
01:52:15 The TTPS says the man reported these incidents,
01:52:18 leading to an investigation and the subsequent charges against the two officers.
01:52:24 [Music]
01:52:28 And now for a look at the weather.
01:52:30 Generally sunny, hazy, and breezy conditions will prevail,
01:52:35 with the likelihood of the odd isolated shower.
01:52:38 A significant concentration of sarin dust is present in the atmosphere.
01:52:43 Persons sensitive to changes in air quality
01:52:46 are advised to exercise the necessary precautions.
01:52:50 Maximum temperatures for today are clocking in at a scorching 34 degrees Celsius for Trinidad,
01:52:56 33 degrees Celsius for Tobago.
01:52:59 [Music]
01:53:06 Welcome back everybody.
01:53:07 Before we leave, can you all do this?
01:53:09 You think you could do that?
01:53:10 You seeing that?
01:53:12 You seeing that person there?
01:53:14 That's a person.
01:53:16 [Laughs]
01:53:18 I believe he's power washing, right?
01:53:20 So up high, a contractor power washes the exterior of the Eric Williams Financial Complex building yesterday
01:53:27 while suspended by safety cables, yeah?
01:53:31 Good morning to that gentleman.
01:53:33 You're a brave man.
01:53:34 I don't know that are going out there.
01:53:36 I don't know that are doing that at all.
01:53:38 Yeah, it takes a very, very special person to do that.
01:53:42 So before we go, judge, too many mothers hurting.
01:53:46 High Court Judge Frank C. Pissard has called for the urgent implementation of systems to ensure the survival of newborns.
01:53:55 So in his delivery of a sermon commemorating Mother's Day yesterday,
01:53:59 at the Marabella Presbyterian Church referred to the recent cases of babies who died
01:54:04 while at the Port of Spain General Hospital and offered prayers on behalf of the grieving mothers.
01:54:10 So collectively, we implore them not to lose faith and we ask God to engulf them with his warm and comforting embrace
01:54:18 as they search for answers and yearn to find peace.
01:54:21 As a nation, we must commit after the inquiries and the litigation has been completed
01:54:26 to urgently implement monitoring systems and protocols so as to give to each newborn the best chance of survival.
01:54:35 All right?
01:54:36 So that's going to be our program for today.
01:54:39 Thank you to all of you, including our guests.
01:54:42 All right. So before we leave, we leave you with this image.
01:54:45 It's captioned Osprey having his tarpon from Sham.
01:54:50 Sham, good morning. And as always, thank you very much for your photographs.
01:54:54 See you tomorrow, everybody.
