00:00 On this day in space.
00:03 On May 7th, 1992, the space shuttle Endeavour launched on its first flight.
00:08 This was the fifth and last space shuttle that was ever built.
00:11 STS-49 was the first of 25 missions to fly on Endeavour.
00:15 The purpose of this mission was to retrieve a satellite called Intelsat-603,
00:19 which had failed to achieve the right orbit after problems with its launch two years earlier.
00:23 Three of the six astronauts had to go on a spacewalk together to fetch the satellite.
00:27 This was the first time that a trio of astronauts did a spacewalk together.
00:31 They first tried to do the job with just two astronauts going out two days in a row,
00:35 but the third try was a charm with an extra pair of hands.
00:38 The crew attached a new motor that would enable Intelsat-603 to leave low-Earth orbit
00:42 and head to its intended geosynchronous orbit.
00:45 And that's what happened on this day in space.
