00:00On this day in space. On March 16, 1966, the crewed Gemini 8 spacecraft became the
00:07first to dock with another spacecraft in space. NASA astronauts Neil Armstrong and
00:12David Scott launched into orbit on their Gemini spacecraft almost three hours
00:16after the uncrewed Agena target vehicle launched separately. After a six-hour
00:20chase, the Gemini crew caught up with the Agena target vehicle and the two
00:23spacecraft successfully docked. Then the problem started. The joint spacecraft
00:28started to tumble out of control. Assuming the problem had to do with the Agena
00:32target vehicle, they decided to undock. But shedding the extra weight actually made
00:36the Gemini spacecraft spin even faster and it was rotating at one revolution per
00:39second. This made the astronauts pretty dizzy, but they still managed to safely
00:43execute an emergency landing. And that's what happened on this day in space.
