00:00Now playing and original soundtrack.
00:30Welcome to Mediïn TV, you have just seen, dear viewers, one of the strong and exceptional moments of the International Day of Jazz, celebrated every year on April 30 and celebrated this year in Morocco and in Tangier at the Palace of Arts and Culture.
00:57The opportunity for us to come back to a global event that is held for the first time in Africa.
01:02The event, animated by the internationally renowned actor Jeremy Irons, has brought together world artists, including the master musician Gnawad Lahlgour, the icon of jazz Herbie Hancock, as well as Claudia Acuna from Chile, John Baisley from the United States, Lakeisha Benjamin from the United States, Richard Bonnard from Cameroon or Tarek Yamani from Lebanon,
01:23and many other artists who have offered to the public, but also to millions of people who have followed the online concert, moments of sharing and exception. I suggest you listen to these statements. The images are from Hayat Ziyani.
01:37It is a great honor for us to participate in this exceptional day and to have played music alongside these internationally renowned artists and especially for my father, who has been in this field for more than 50 years. We are proud that this day took place here in Tangier, a way for us to participate in the promotion of our heritage and of ICO, our flag.
02:03It was incredible to share in this place, this new place, which is magnificent, with incredible artists, and to mix Caribbean music with Moroccan music. It was an immense joy for me.
02:19It was a moment of joy, of inspiration, of unity and of sharing that took place here in Morocco, a country that has been able, over the centuries, to make this land a place of dialogue and meeting.
02:32I am very happy and very touched by this concert. I assure you that I am bubbling inside. I feel like I am on another planet.
02:45The World All-Star Concert began with an unprecedented performance, Welcome to Country, performed by the famous musicians of Dargnawa, followed by a spectacular performance by Didi Bridgewater from Spain and Cheek, highlighting the cultural links between Morocco and Spain.
03:04Jazméa Orn called on the talents of Ambrose Akin Moussaer and Billy Child for the swing song Free Your Mind. Richard Bonin performed with tenderness his song Écossa Boulou.
03:15The exceptional Tiki Blue and Abdelal Gourde, icons of Guinean music, paid homage to the Guinean music of Morocco and American jazz,
03:24interpreting the composition of Randy Weston, Blue Moses, Melody Gardeau and Philippe Poel, delivering a sublime interpretation of This Foolish Heart Could Love You.
03:34Femi Kutié said that there was a people and a world in his electrifying performance. Let's listen to other statements.
03:44I visited and filmed in Morocco several times. I was in Fez, Wazazate, Saouira and Marrakech and I have never been to Tangier.
03:57But I am very happy to participate in this event. Since I arrived and during my walks in the city, I learn a lot about this city and its history.
04:08As I move about the city, more and more about it and about its history.
04:14So many things that are part of my life that began…
04:17A large part of my musical universe started here in Morocco. Before, I heard certain sentences in the songs and I did not understand what they meant.
04:27But today, as I walk around this beautiful city, I have grasped the meaning of the words and the musical intonations.
04:34I went to Rabat, Kaza and Saouira, but being here in Tangier is really special.
04:41It's really amazing that this year we are in Tangier, a fantastic city. We are honored to celebrate here the International Jazz Day 2024.
04:50These last five years, the concerts have been virtual and now we are organizing it in person in Tangier.
04:56And really, thank you for having us here and we are very excited.
05:02Created by the UNESCO General Conference in 2011, the International Jazz Day gathers every year on April 30 countries and communities around the world
05:12to highlight the power of this musical genre and its role in promoting peace, dialogue between cultures, diversity, respect and human dignity.
05:23The International Jazz Day, recognized by the UN General Assembly, touches more than 2 billion people every year on all continents
05:31thanks to educational programs, shows and activities to raise awareness among communities.
05:37It allows the international community to become aware of the virtues of jazz as a force of peace, unity, dialogue,
05:45strengthened cooperation between peoples, as well as as a pedagogical tool.
05:50Let's listen to these statements. The images are from Haïtien.
05:53We got to see some music at Dargnawa and that was just absolutely amazing.
05:59His family, I'm blanking on the gentleman saying that...
06:04We went to Dargnawa, we met the whole family, it was really fantastic.
06:09Being able to play with Abdullah El Gurd, the master of Gnawa music, as well as his son and his daughter, was a special moment because they are splendid musicians.
06:19We played many pieces by Randy Weston, which is part of the classical heritage of jazz.
06:25And this fusion between Gnawa and jazz is for me special.
06:29It's the same in jazz. Jazz is very spiritual for a lot of us, you know.
06:42Jazz in the Arab world is invading the universe of music and taking a predominant place.
06:49Of course, the Arab world is vast and each region has its specificities.
06:53And we must not forget that some regions are going through sad moments.
06:58But for example, the situation in Egypt is not that of Lebanon or that of Morocco.
07:03But today, there are without question a generation of musicians who carry the colors of Arab jazz very high.
07:11Thank you, dear viewers, for your loyalty.
