00:40 But the Dutchwoman still has a solid overall lead

00:43 as we head into the final weekend of La Vuelta Femenina 2024.

00:47 The GC battle should take a back seat today in the seventh stage,

00:51 which looks like one for the punchier sprinters.

00:53 Our green jersey wearer Mariana Vars is seeking her second stage victory of the week,

00:58 but so far we've had a different winner every day.

01:01 Today's profile looks pretty flat,

01:07 but there are over 1000 metres of climbing on the menu

01:10 once we leave San Este band de Gormaz.

01:13 Fatigue will also be setting in after six days of hard racing.

01:16 And the finish is by no means straightforward,

01:19 with a real kick up to the finish line in Siguenza.

01:26 A group of seven riders got into the day's breakaway,

01:28 but they were caught just before the live pictures began around halfway through the stage.

01:33 One of them was Anna Kiesenhofer,

01:35 and the Olympic champion decided to give it another go,

01:37 the peloton allowing the Austrian to open up a small gap.

01:41 The Brazilian champion Tota Magalhaes then set off in pursuit,

01:45 but she found it hard work bridging across to Kiesenhofer.

01:48 She eventually got some company,

01:51 with Flora Perkins, Georgie Howe, Anja Lowe, Laura Molinar and Karolina Vargas

01:56 making it a six-woman chase group.

01:58 Between them, they had enough firepower to catch Kiesenhofer with 50k to go.

02:03 Vargas had briefly been distanced,

02:06 but the Colombian was swept up by two more chasers,

02:08 Cristina Tonezzi and Silvia Zanardi,

02:11 as they made it a nine-rider breakaway.

02:13 Their gap wasn't significant though, just over a minute,

02:19 and there was nobody at the front to trouble the race leader, Demi Follering.

02:23 Wismar-Lise Baeik soon took up the reins at the front of the peloton for Vos,

02:28 who didn't need to worry about taking point to the intermediate sprints.

02:31 The maximum haul there went to Vargas, who was soon dropped.

02:35 Magalhaes also saying goodbye to the breakaway,

02:39 as the seven leaders now entered the final 40k.

02:42 But they were about to be caught,

02:44 because with a change of direction into a crosswind,

02:47 the race suddenly sparked into life.

02:49 You can see all the damage that has been done behind,

02:52 on these narrow roads, in the crosswind.

02:55 The peloton splitting into several groups,

02:57 with SD Works Pro Time putting the hammer down at the front,

03:00 just as they did on Stage 4.

03:02 Almost all of the top overall contenders were on the right side of the split.

03:06 Follering, Longa Borghini, Marcus, Labusse, Muzik and Bauernfeind.

03:10 The highest GC rider to miss out was 9th-placed Jara Kastelijn.

03:15 Stage winners Vos, Jackson and Volkner were also up there.

03:18 But Movistar had been caught out,

03:20 with no Liana Lippert and no Olivia Baril at the front.

03:24 The Spanish outfit leading the chase, but the damage had been done

03:27 and the gap was already out to over a minute.

03:30 There were 29 riders in the front group,

03:33 and as they continued to speed their way towards Siguenza,

03:36 it was looking increasingly unlikely that the chasers would catch up.

03:42 Following, discussing tactics with Reusser and Vass,

03:45 perhaps plotting something for the final.

03:47 Well, the attacks soon began to fly,

03:51 with Mischa Bredevold lighting it up for SD Works Pro Time.

03:54 The European champion was quickly caught

03:56 before her teammate Marlon Reusser had a go.

03:59 An attack now goes in from Marlon Reusser.

04:06 The moves coming thick and fast on this run-in.

04:10 And with all of these tactical games going on,

04:12 the chase group had closed the gap to 30 seconds.

04:15 Bredevold getting a small gap with Smulders, Williams and Jackson,

04:20 but they too were caught in the final few kilometers.

04:23 The front group managing to resist the chasers, though,

04:26 and they would contest the uphill sprint.

04:28 Kristin Vockner powering away from Longhi Borghini,

04:34 but Marianne Vos is in third wheel.

05:25 And, yeah, of course, when they do so much work,

05:29 then you want to try and make it in the final.

05:31 And Rianne Marcus and me were in this final break

05:37 when the echelon started.

05:39 And, yeah, that was a good situation,

05:42 but, of course, also a little bit hard to control.

05:44 So a little bit stressful.

05:46 But then when we entered the final kilometer,

05:49 yeah, we just tried to stay in the best possible position

05:52 and go for it.

05:53 Vos winning by two seconds from a Vockner

05:56 who continues her impressive week after winning stage four.

05:59 Longhi Borghini in third,

06:01 followed by Vollering and Ingvild Gassjén.

06:03 Longhi Borghini has shaved a couple of seconds off Vollering's lead,

06:07 but the Dutch champion still goes into the final day

06:10 with an advantage of 52 seconds.

06:12 It's her race to lose.

06:14 Vos has already sewn up the green jersey, mathematically speaking.

06:18 She just needs to complete the race

06:19 to win the points classification for the second year running.

06:22 Caroline Svinkels, on the other hand,

06:25 will have her work cut out to keep the queen of the mountains jersey
