Goldsmiths Students Occupy Library As Palestine Protests Spread To UK
Transcript
00:00 So currently there are students occupying Goldsmiths Library. We've been in here overnight
00:06 since yesterday when we had a protest where over 100 students and staff from the university
00:12 walked out of class or library or just came to join the protest. Obviously this is a form of
00:16 disruption, we stayed overnight, but we're doing this to try and leverage our management on a
00:21 series of demands that we've been campaigning for for months, which includes ending financial
00:26 complicity as well as releasing a statement which condemns what's going on in Palestine
00:31 and actually reaching out to help rebuild educational infrastructure in Gaza. We think
00:35 that's an important thing that British institutions should be doing at the moment and we think it's
00:39 pretty despicable that institutions like Goldsmiths, which call themselves progressive universities,
00:45 like to champion decolonization and anti-racism, can still stay silent on what's going on
00:51 or continue to fund apartheid. Ridiculous to talk about disruption on the small scale of students
00:57 just standing up for what we think is right, standing up for justice in Palestine, when you
01:03 look at the disruption which has obviously happened in Palestine and Gaza itself. We're
01:07 sitting in an institution in our own university buildings, meanwhile every university in Gaza
01:13 has been destroyed. We know that this is disruption, protest and action,
01:19 occupation is a form of disruption, but it's disruption for a cause and it's a disruption
01:23 to try and get the authorities to listen to the people. The vast majority of the British public
01:28 does support Palestine, supports a ceasefire and it's the same on campus. What we're saying is that
01:34 as students at this university we should have a say in the decisions that are made and we should
01:38 have a say where the finances and our fees are going and we don't want it to be complicit in
01:44 what's going on in Palestine.
