00:00 In the wake of the pro-Palestine protest across major American universities and subsequent
00:09 arrests, India emphasized the importance of striking a delicate balance between freedom
00:13 of expression and maintaining public safety and order to the United States.
00:18 According to the media reports, the External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal,
00:22 in a pointed remark aimed at United States authorities critical of India's internal affairs,
00:27 stressed that the actions of democracies are primarily judged by their domestic conduct
00:32 rather than international rhetoric.
00:34 The protest, triggered by Israel-Hamas conflict, saw significant arrests, including nearly
00:40 a hundred at the University of Southern California and dozens at the University of Texas in Austin.
00:45 The movement has gained momentum after over 100 demonstrators were apprehended at Columbia
00:50 University, prompting similar protests nationwide.
00:54 The demonstrators are demanding universities and US administration to sever ties with Israel,
00:59 a move contested by Biden administration despite Hamas' previous attack that led to civilian
01:04 casualties and hostage situations.
01:07 "We've seen reports or several reports on it and have been following related events.
01:14 In every democracy, there has to be the right balance between freedom of expression, sense
01:21 of responsibility and public safety and order.
01:26 Democracies in particular should display this understanding in regard to other fellow democracies.
01:31 After all, we are all judged by what we do at home and not what we say abroad.
01:38 And as far as the question regarding Indian students is concerned, we are always in touch
01:42 with Indian students and as and when there are issues which have to be resolved, we'll
01:46 look into it."
01:47 And so, now India has come out, citing freedom of speech and its importance as a lesson for
01:53 the United States.
01:55 This development comes days after US's constant remarks on Pannun and Arvind Kejriwal's arrest.
