OCTA Research Group survey shows less Filipinos experienced poverty, hunger in Q1 2024

00:00The first three months of the year have been a great take-off point for the government in its anti-poverty crusade.
00:07And as our Mela Lesmora reports, results of a major pollster survey on self-rated poverty
00:14show a dip of a few percentage points that bode well and pushes government to work even harder
00:20to bring a whole lot more above the poverty line.

00:54Based on the latest survey of the OCTO Research Group,
00:57fewer Filipinos experienced poverty and hunger in the first quarter of 2024.
01:02From 45 percent last December, the self-rated poverty or number of Filipinos who consider themselves poor
01:09is now down to 42 percent or an estimated 11.1 million families.
01:14Meanwhile, as for self-rated hunger, the data show an 11 percent drop in the first quarter of 2024.
01:21At the House of Representatives, several lawmakers expressed satisfaction on the survey results.
01:27According to House Speaker Martin Romualdez,
01:29this positive trajectory underscores the impact of government's targeted policies
01:34aimed at enhancing economic stability and providing necessary support to the most vulnerable sectors.
01:40Meanwhile, other lawmakers also shared suggestions to further ease hunger and poverty in the country.
01:46For House Committee on Senior Citizens Chair Rodolfo Ordonez,
01:49he is pushing for more job opportunities for fit-to-work senior citizens.
01:54Meanwhile, for House Deputy Majority Leader Alfredo Losantos,
01:57the DBM must ensure the budget allocations for different aid programs of the government
