Canterbury Auction Galleries say in an increasingly online world means there needs to be more focus on modern collectibles
Transcript
00:00 While the Cansbury auction galleries may be known for its range of antiques, a new type
00:05 of sale this weekend will see modern collectibles like rare Pokemon cards and Barbie dolls being
00:11 sold here for the first time since it first opened in 1991.
00:17 It says modern collectibles could be the future for auction houses in an increasingly online
00:24 world.
00:25 We have to, like any business, change with the times.
00:27 The collectors change and we therefore have to change what they want.
00:31 I liken the Pokemon cards, for instance, to back when I was a lad at school, there was
00:37 stamp collecting and people would pay thousands of pounds for a rare stamp.
00:41 Well the next generation or two up the line, it's now Pokemon cards, every place stamps.
00:46 Nobody collects stamps anymore basically at a local level, not of that age.
00:51 Society is a lot more liberal as well, as we find with the Barbies.
00:55 Some of the Barbies now are very, very akin to RuPaul's Drag Race and what we see on the
01:01 television and people are not so conservative as they used to be.
01:05 The latest generation want what they know and what they understand.
01:09 As you can see, some of these Barbies are very impressive.
01:12 I mean look at that dress, but this isn't just about the way they look, it's about their
01:17 rarity.
01:18 They're coming in the original cardboard boxes.
01:20 There's around 100 of these very special Barbies and they will be selling for up to £500 in
01:27 some cases, maybe even more depending on who's bidding.
01:32 These dolls aren't the only collectibles causing a buzz, with the Pokemon cards being put up
01:37 for auction potentially bringing in £15,000.
01:42 For the man who helped get the cards put up for auction, there's a very clear reason for
01:47 their popularity.
01:48 It's so nostalgic, that's the thing.
01:50 It's a very nostalgic thing and it's very prominent at the moment.
01:53 It's really reached the pinnacle of popularity and it's just a lovely thing to handle.
01:59 It's more moving from these traditional antiques to the more modern collectible.
02:03 When you're growing up, you idolise these certain things and these are the things that
02:08 not necessarily you can afford, but when you're a younger person, you don't have access to
02:13 the means to get the item.
02:14 So after spending a few hours at the auction house in Canterbury earlier today, I was inspired
02:20 to get myself my very own Pokemon cards.
02:23 These may not be worth that much now, but in a few years' time, these could be worth
02:28 thousands of pounds.
02:30 The auction house hopes this will be one of six so-called next generation collectible
02:35 sales they will do throughout the year, with a James Bond sale planned for the summer.
