Warragamba Dam is set to spill

Warragamba Dam, which supplies drinking water to Greater Sydney, is set to spill on April 8, after the rain moves on. Water NSW chief executive Andrew George says it was at 96.3 per cent of capacity on the morning of April 5.

00:00 We are expecting moderate to heavy rainfall over the water supply catchments in Greater Sydney as a result of this event.

00:06 We are expecting to see Warragamba Dam spill as a result of this event.

00:11 Warragamba is this morning sitting at 96.3% of full supply capacity.

00:16 We require about 90 millimetres of rain to fill Warragamba Dam.

00:21 Based on the current forecast from the Bureau of Meteorology,

00:24 we're expecting 100 to 150 millimetres of rainfall over that catchment as a result of this event.

00:30 That means the Warragamba will move into a spill, likely Monday morning.

00:36 What's important about that is that the spill will occur likely when the rainfall event has moved on.

00:41 So it is very important that the community remain vigilant. They do follow the advice and the warnings of the Bureau of Meteorology.

00:48 We're also keeping a close eye on the Peon Dam.

00:51 The Peon Dam on the Illawarra Escarpment is currently sitting at 81% capacity.

00:56 We require about 130 millimetres of rain to fill the Peon Dam,

01:01 and we're currently expecting, based on the latest forecast, around about 140 millimetres for the Peon catchment.

01:08 That is likely to put the Peon Dam also into a very small spill sometime Monday morning.

01:14 The supply catchments are wet.

01:18 We do urge the community, as I said, to remain vigilant and monitor the alerts from the Bureau of Meteorology

01:23 and heed the advice of the SES over the weekend.
