An 18-year-old man has died after an alleged car theft and joy ride turned fatal overnight. There were as many as nine people in the car when it rolled in the Alice Springs CBD, Police describing the incident as a tragedy.

00:00 A town rocked by tragedy, police combed the site of Alice Springs latest alleged car theft,
00:09 this one claiming the life of a young man.
00:12 Yeah, with kids in there sadly and another young man, 18 years old, has lost his life.
00:17 Really nervous because it's not safe here.
00:20 Sad.
00:21 Nobody wants to turn it up.
00:25 Police say the car was stolen from this caravan park in the town south around 2 o'clock in
00:31 the morning.
00:33 At 3.40 it attempted to turn right at speed in the CBD, flipping and crashing into a wall.
00:41 An 18 year old who was one of nine in the car and was sitting in the open window was
00:46 crushed.
00:48 Others fled the scene as he lay wounded.
00:51 And all the persons who were uninjured or appear uninjured ran from the area and not
00:56 one of those persons came to the aid of the person who had sustained injuries.
01:01 And police say it could have been worse.
01:04 The mere fact that it had a canopy on the back probably saved the lives of a number
01:08 of people within that vehicle.
01:10 Hours after the crash, police have remained on scene trying to better understand how the
01:15 car crashed.
01:17 These questions all to be answered in a police investigation.
01:21 This is a tragedy, a tragedy for that young person who's died, the person's family, those
01:26 passer by's who came to his aid in the absence of anyone else taking any care or compassion
01:33 toward his circumstance.
01:35 No one has been arrested and no charges have yet been laid.
