00:00 These members of Minnesota's Somali community say anger towards President Biden for not
00:05 calling a ceasefire has swung their vote.
00:08 It's like they have a license to kill innocent kids. And for that reason, it's inhumane to
00:16 vote for that candidate.
00:19 By choosing the uncommitted option on the ballot, a voter banks the party without committing
00:24 to any of the listed candidates.
00:26 Last week in Michigan, Biden saw a surprise slide as some 13% of Democrats there voted
00:32 uncommitted in the primary, following a campaign aimed at pressuring the president to change
00:37 his policy on Israel.
00:39 The Democrats didn't believe the movement would gain momentum in other states. But in
00:44 Minnesota, a coalition of progressive Democrats and Muslim Americans are pushing the cause.
00:50 Our own president that we elected is refusing to listen to us. This type of policy is a
00:58 threat to our democracy itself. Because he has to be able to understand that his public,
01:03 the people who actually elected him, are telling him no more killing. And this is not something
01:07 nuanced issue. This is about saving lives and ending war.
01:11 The strength of the campaign in Michigan fell on a high demographic of young voters, progressives
01:16 and Arab Americans. Minnesota saw one of the highest levels of youth turnouts in the midterms
01:22 at one percentage point behind Michigan. It's home to some 108,000 Arab Americans, compared
01:28 to around 277,000 in Michigan.
01:32 Unlike Michigan, Minnesota is not expected to be a battleground state, as the Democrats
01:37 have seen historic success there. The voters all the same being closely observed as a test
01:43 of Biden's strength within his party.
