00:00 Air France-KLM announced Thursday that it had recorded a net profit and an unprecedented
00:04 annual turnover in its history, rejoicing that it had achieved solid performance despite
00:09 tensions in the Middle East, supply problems in spare parts and a loss in the last quarter
00:14 of 2023.
00:15 The Franco-Dutch airline group has released € 934 million in net profits, plus 28.3%
00:22 over a year, for a record turnover of € 30 billion, plus 14%.
00:26 It has finally established its financial structure and is overwhelmed by Covid-19, finding as
00:31 promised positive personal funds for the first time since 2019, at € 500 million, it
00:37 said in a statement.
00:38 But the end of the year was less cheerful, with a net loss of € 256 million in the
00:44 fourth quarter, while the group was still a year earlier at the same time.
00:48 The Paris Stock Exchange reacted badly, the Air France title yielding 8.06% to € 10.49
00:55 in a slightly higher market of 0.10%.
00:58 In addition to the results of the fourth quarter, investors could also have been disappointed
01:04 by an annual profit that analysts saw exceed € 1 billion, according to
01:08 compilations by Faxe and Bloomberg.
01:10 In the fourth quarter, Air France and especially KLM suffered from a shortage of spare parts,
01:15 a recurring problem for the entire sector since the pandemic, but also of qualified
01:19 workforce, which has disrupted the availability of some aircraft.
01:23 In addition, the geopolitical situation, mainly the war between Israel and Hamas, led the
01:29 group to suspend certain lines, including those towards Tel Aviv, from early October,
01:34 and cooled the demand for neighboring countries.
01:36 Transavia, the group's low-cost, suffered from it and failed to be profitable in 2023
01:42 despite the continuation of its expansion.
01:44 Finally, the freight rates have strongly receded after a setback in the wake of the pandemic.
01:49 This end of the year weighed on operational profitability, which was still 7.8% at the
01:55 end of the first three quarters, at the top of the target range for 2024-2026, 7 to 8%.
02:02 It was finally established at 5.7%, an increase of 1.2 points compared to 2022, the year of
02:08 the return to green.
02:09 These results contrast with the nightmare of the health crisis, which had caused the company
02:16 to accumulate more than €1 billion in 2020 and 2021, forcing it to recapitalize and call
02:21 for help from the French and Dutch states.
02:23 "In 2023, we have kept our commitments by achieving solid operational and financial
02:29 performance ", said the Air France General Director-General, Benjamin Smith, quoted
02:34 in the statement.
02:35 "Pursuit of debt relief.
02:37 These results have been obtained despite a number of passengers transported not yet
02:42 at the level of the pre-crisis, 93.6 million passengers in Air France aircraft, KLM and
02:47 Transavia last year, that's 10.3 million more than in 2022, but still 10.4 million less
02:53 than in 2019.
02:54 At the same time, Air France-KLM has continued its debt relief, its net debt falling from
03:00 €6.33 billion at the end of 2022 to €5.04 billion at the end of 2023.
03:05 Despite its record profit, Air France-KLM did not mention Thursday a return to a
03:11 dividend payment to its shareholders.
03:12 Objective side for 2024, the year of the 20 years of its creation, the company has said
03:18 it wants to increase its passenger capacity by 5% over a year and limit the increase in
03:23 its unit costs by 1% and 2% against 3.5% in 2023.
03:27 Despite an increase in activity, it plans to leave a €7.6 billion kerosene bill
03:33 in a slight drop from €7.7 billion in 2023.
