I think we all realised this wouldn't be like the other strikes where it was one or two days,

A dispute which would last for a year was just beginning.

The miners' strike.

Thousands of workers from the Durham coal fields walked out.

They were fighting to protect their pits, their jobs, their communities.

There was no work so a lot of the young people moved out.
