Glasgow food stories: Lebowskis head chef and creating a fun menu that’s value for money

Andy McManus Neilson has been cooking for the People of Glasgow for years now and has experience in restaurants all over the city. For Lebowskis, his aim was to create good fun food that’s value for money.

I'm Andy, I'm the head chef here at Lebowski's in Finiston.

Lebowski's is a bar and restaurant.

And the food we do is a mixture between street food

and your classic Americana-style burgers.

The street food side is a lot of small plates.

Not like tapas style, but I recommend two or three wee plates

to have a filming, because it's just nice wee light bites.

And it's just nice food, fun food too.

So the highlights of the menu, definitely the small plates.

I really like them. They're really popular.

So it's a different take.

It's a more refined version of street food, so it's not slapped ash.

It's quite nicely played, really nice cooking techniques.

Value for money on them.

Say you're going out for a night out, you're going to look weird next to the hydro.

So if you're going to go at a gig, you don't want to have a big massive meal.

So just a couple of wee plates fill you up.

Aye, it's something different.

We'll have a look at what's happening, say like hydro or Armadale, SEC, etc.

And we'll come up with a special that is in theme with what's happening.

A couple of weeks ago we had a Hot Wheels monster truck on.

So we done a hot burger with monster munch crisps on it, things like that.

We had Shania Twain playing last year and we done the Shania burger,

which was really, really popular.

That was like a Canada-based burger with waffles and maple syrup and stuff like that.

Definitely people from Glasgow, they like value for money.

They don't like getting ripped off, that's for sure.

So one of the newest things we've got, we've got a £5 lunch menu on,

Monday to Friday, 12 to 4.

And you come in, it's open sandwiches for a fiver.

It's really good value.

It's a really nice, tasty meal.

Definitely these days people are more aware of what's happening in the world with food,

like with social media and cooking programmes on the telly.

So I think folk want to try different things.

And you can get a chance to try a lot of different things,

different cultural foods, different flavours you might not be used to.

I like a lot of Asian, Pan-Asian cooking, so I like to try and bring a lot of that into my food.

I think it's in the last few years, Finiston, this bit of Gower Street's got really popular.

There is such a wide variety.

You go a couple of shops up, you've got fish restaurants, you've got steak houses,

you've got Mexican ramen.

So there is a wide variety of what you can have.

In the city centre, you're a wee bit restricted.

Maybe it's like pizza places, burger places, things like that.

But there's a big, big different variety of shops up here that you can go to.

And you could probably eat out every night for a couple of months and try something different.

You're right up into the party crows.
