Experts Discover 11,000-Year-Old Stone Age Structure Under the Sea

Just off the coast of modern day Germany researchers have found a truly ancient discovery. They say it is a prehistoric man-made stone wall, one dating back some 11,000 years.

00:08 This is what they say is a prehistoric man-made stone

00:11 wall, one dating back more than 10 millennia.

00:14 It was discovered at a depth of around 69 feet.

00:17 But back when the structure was built,

00:18 it wasn't underwater at all.

00:20 The discovery was first made by geologist Jacob Gearson

00:23 while conducting underwater surveys with his students.

00:26 He returned a year later to confirm his suspicions,

00:29 this time with research divers and prehistoric experts.

00:32 They used echo sounding to reconstruct the area

00:35 during different periods, finding

00:36 that while the wall must be at least 8,500 years old,

00:39 as the area went underwater shortly after that time,

00:42 it's likely much older because of the wall's purpose.

00:45 Experts believe that it was likely built

00:47 to aid in the hunting of deer, as herds of the animals

00:49 will follow long, impeding structures.

00:51 Those include the likes of rivers or natural rock faces,

00:55 but also includes man-made walls as well.

00:57 And since reindeer left the area and headed north

00:59 upwards of 11,000 years ago, they

01:02 believe it must have been built before that.
