00:12 My dear sister, two months have passed since my last letter.
00:17 Time does move slow when you have little to do.
00:21 As I sit and wait in this dreary cell, I watch the courtyard outside with great intrigue.
00:28 Yesterday, I witnessed something quite special.
00:31 A crow landed close to my window, attempting to grasp a piece of bread lodged just beyond its reach.
00:38 This determined creature tried time and time again, but its beak was too short and too thick.
00:44 Eventually, the crow left and what I concluded was defeat.
00:48 But to my amazement, the crow flew back with a stick in its feet.
00:54 This cunning bird used the stick to dislodge the food and fly away with its prize.
01:01 A small victory, but it reminded me of our struggle.
01:05 And that we must adapt if our plan is to succeed.
01:09 Some may shun the outsider's weapons and tactics, but we cannot be afraid to embrace them in pursuit of our goals.
01:17 Spread the word to our allies. We must be like the crow.

01:27 Action remains at the core of Rise of the Roman.
01:41 It is the culmination of our previous work on action games as Team Ninja.
01:52 Team Ninja's action is known for its high speed and difficulty.
01:57 We feel it's part of the player's expectations as well.
02:03 There's the importance of action in gameplay.
02:14 And the power of authenticity you get from a period drama story.
02:23 Let's fight!
02:24 Whilst I was visiting places such as Shoku Senjuku or Meirin Gakusha,
02:36 I realized how locals were truly dedicated to their studies at the time.
02:40 There were plenty of academic manuals, including research on the Dutch and Occidental weaponry.
02:52 At a time when Japan was isolated and people couldn't access any information from the rest of the world,
02:58 it was incredible to see the amount of foreign information, worldly cultures and teachings they were studying.
03:04 They then put this to good use in order to build Japan's future.
03:15 I believe we managed to convey that in Rise of the Ronin as well.
03:18 Looking at the Bakumatsu era, there were many philosophers with different schools of thought.
03:31 They can be split into pro and anti-shogunate ideologies.
03:35 These ideologies fought and contrasted with each other.
03:39 The goal was to look at how this fight would translate in the action,
03:42 which weapons and fighting styles would be adopted,
03:45 and first of all, why that fight was happening.
03:48 We looked at each personality, along with the choice of weapon,
03:59 and worked out how to make these battles authentic within Ronin.
04:02 The more we revisited the history of the battle, the more we realized that
04:06 the Munen Star and the Hokushinto Star as well
04:09 demonstrated how these people lived their life through the katana,
04:13 how it was their weapon of choice.
04:16 It was here where we really felt the power of history.
04:20 From that period, as we moved towards the modern era,
04:23 weaponry changed.
04:25 For example, handguns were introduced.
04:35 We had to think how to integrate them
04:38 and balance the use of them with close combat,
04:41 which meant we had to develop gameplay
04:45 that incorporated both close combat and ranged attacks.
04:49 The bayonet was a logical addition when we thought of developing new weapons for Ronin.
04:57 It perfectly suits the Bakumatsu era.
05:04 We dedicated time to working on adding new gimmicks in the fighting actions.
05:08 This game is completely original.
05:21 As an action game, I believe that it wasn't necessary
05:26 to make the game resemble a history textbook.
05:31 It was about creating a reality that was totally plausible
05:34 in Rise of the Ronin's universe.
05:37 The team would either agree or disagree to several ideas each day
05:42 to crystallize what was possible in this game's universe.
05:46 When it comes to action, first I look at the story.
05:55 I look at the story as a whole.
05:58 When it comes to action, first I look at something that is humanly possible.
06:02 Actions you are able to achieve through exercise and training.
06:06 This is the action that I wanted to make,
06:11 rather than people just flying around.
06:14 I wanted to explore what is possible for humans to achieve
06:20 after long years of dedicated training.
06:23 [FIGHTING SOUNDS]
06:26 I know. Tag along with me, will you?
06:39 What we insisted on most whilst building Rise of the Ronin's story
06:47 was creating a bond system.
06:52 We looked at the bond you create with other historical figures.
06:55 Then they can either help you or become opponents.
07:02 You won't lay a finger on me!
07:06 Depending on the people you take with you,
07:09 this will also affect the techniques you can use too.
07:12 Having a certain character with you will bring something unique.
07:20 It also allows for unexpected combinations that might prove to be worthwhile.
07:24 You can switch between characters as well.
07:27 It was a lot of work to create this system,
07:34 but it was definitely the right thing to do.
07:37 There is also the ability to read an enemy's moves to your advantage
07:46 that is unique to this game.
07:49 This is demonstrated through the Counter-Spark system.
07:52 Actions used based on the opponent's moves.
08:00 It needs to be used with precise timing.
08:04 And you have to be able to predict your enemy's moves.
08:15 A large part of the combat in Ronin is based around a wide variety of actions
08:19 you can choose to combat your enemies.
08:21 It was essential for us that the player gets positive feelings from the action,
08:38 to feel the battles, and for the enemy actions to look cool.
08:43 However, as we set the stage for the game and built its story,
08:46 the period drama aspect was a strong element that we always kept in mind.
