The film features real-life siblings Beau and Jeff Bridges as the Fabulous Baker Boys. The Bakers, both musical prodigies, have long been known as a twin-piano act, with the less gifted Frank (Beau Bridges) relying on the abilities of his brilliant younger brother, Jack (Jeff Bridges). With their career falling to nickel-and-dime shows in second-rate bars, the Bakers decide they need a female vocalist to help them gain recognition. They choose auditioner Susie Diamond (Michelle Pfeiffer), who is not only a talented singer but also stunningly beautiful.
